Bettie☯ Sadly remiss in this quarter, sorry!

Themis-Athena (Does not and never will own a Kindle) I used to work on this for a while (not the Milosevic trial, though). So about half of the books I listed used to be work-related must (or semi-must) reads way back when! :~

message 3: by Duke (new)

Duke Press Thanks! If you are interested in international law, you should definitely check out Judith Armatta's account of the trial. Definitive but also readable.

Themis-Athena (Does not and never will own a Kindle) Thanks for the recommendation -- I put it on my "to read" list!

message 5: by Jonfaith (new)

Jonfaith Just the Bosnian War?

Themis-Athena (Does not and never will own a Kindle) I didn't create the list, but I'd think from its title that would be the limitation, yes ...

message 7: by Wanda (new)

Wanda How about this one? Sadly, it is the only one I have read -

The Cellist of Sarajevo

Themis-Athena (Does not and never will own a Kindle) I haven't read it, but from the description it very much sounds like something that should be added! (Also sounds like a really good book?)

message 9: by Wanda (new)

Wanda W's daddy served here with the PA National Guard and the stories he told broke my heart. For the 18 months he was there, I collected hats, gloves coats, clothing and shoes for the children and sent packages monthly. So sad.

To me, the story was heartbreaking and a great read.

Wow!! You never cease to amaze me ...

Did you send the packages to W.'s dad/to be distributed through the National Guard?

Sigh. Another "to read" entry ...

Wanda Yes. I sent the packages to his daddy who would take them to the surrounding villages and hand out everything. Sometimes he took the packages to the schools for teachers to hand out supplies to those in dire need. I remember him telling me of one family where the children could not all attend school together because the children shared one pair of shoes. I told my friends and in one week we had a box of brand new shoes to send over.

You're too good for this world! Seriously.

Btw, have you ever heard of Room to Read (http://www.roomtoread.org/ )? I caught a broadcast about them on NPR's "Humankind" feature this weekend ... somehow I keep thinking we should be getting the GR community to get into this, or at least our li'l nook of it ...?

message 15: by Wanda (new)

Wanda Never heard of this. Work interfers with my life. Going to investigate right now. May be something for the Boy Scouts or the Youth Group to participate in.

message 16: by Al (new)

Al Sitarek I NEED HELP LOCATING A BOOK All I can remember is that it was about the war in Bosnia. It was about a US soldier that was in charge of supply convoys that distributed medical equipment throughout the region. Unfortunately most of the supplies fell into the wrong hands. Ultimately trying to change this situation the soldier goes AWOL and tries to help the people struggling to survive. In his attempt he becomes imprisoned in a camp where he becomes witness to horrible acts of violence. Where people were caged in small metal crates stacked on top of each other, forcing them to pass their bodily functions all over one another. In one perticular event he is forced to watch another inmate mutilate a prison mate using only his teeth. I would greatly appreciate your help in finding this book.

I haven't read it, but it sounds like This Way to Heaven, by Tom Foley, may be the book you're looking for.
