Does the Song of The Lioness series by Tamora Pierce really have sex in it? cuz that's in the kids section of my library.
im pretty sure they didnt have sex in shiver it was in the 3th one possibly the 2ed one but not the main characters grace and sam

Great that the adult books mentioned (Book#2 of the Night Huntress Series is still listed) in the comment section are no longer on the list, but now some of the titles from the Kate Daniels' series by Ilona Andrews is now on the list. And technically Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier isn't YA, either (although it is a wonderful book and is fine read for teens). I read Shiver awhile back, and I don't recall any sex in it.

I'm not sure if I read it now if it would still seem as scandalous, but there are definitely descriptions about feelings and desires emerging from young love.

I have only read the first book in the series so far so I know I am not confusing it with the other 2 books. Plus I just read it last week and I remember it clearly.
IMO Beautiful Disaster is not YA. I know it is listed as YA, but it feels adult to me.

I've added The Ballad of Young Tam Lin https://www.createspace.com/3661637, or as a Kindle download. It works as older YA. Since Lady Janet Dunbar starts as a virgin, and ends up pregnant, I'd say there's sex in it, but nothing is graphic or spelled out - you just can figure out that once the kissing slows down so the clothes can come off, they're not going to do the laundry. It's a great read for older YA, or any adult with romance in their hearts, and a yearning for something magical in the universe.

Yeah, "Beautiful Disaster" by Jamie McGuire really isn't a YA novel. Just because the protagonist is 18/19 (and her love interest is 20/21) doesn't always make it YA. A good chunk of the novel doesn't really much even relate to the average teenager.
Amethyst raises an interesting issue. What does the "average teenager" relate to? Which teenager? Where? When I was a teen, NONE of the people I hung out with were "average," yet none of them were the same in their deviations from the norm. Two guys were heavy stoners. Another was an engineer at the local independent radio station. I was a theater geek. One girl who hung out with us sometimes was a cheerleader (still don't know how that happened.) What was "average?" Is YA only the concerns of suburban white teens - the prom, catching a boyfriend, deciding when to do "IT?" How, then, does YA fanatasy fit in?
Or are we talking about adolescent universals - "I'm lonely, I'm confused, I'm abnormal?" If that is what the "average teenager" can relate to, than the field becomes huge. And then we get to the issue of who is making the definitions of what YA is, and how it works, and, ultimately, do we (consumers) want those definitions to lie only in the hands of publishers and critics?

Relating to my post above, I'm curious - what books did you enjoy when you were in the YA range that were NOT YA? For me, The Lord of the Rings, Penguin Island (Anatole France), 3 Men in a Boat (Jerome K. Jerome), A Tale of Two Cities, and Pride and Prejudice (among many others). I also read YA crap, like the Heinlein "manhood" adventure books (Starman Jones, Starship Troopers).
I just read XVI by Julia Karr and it doesn't have sex in it. They talk about it a lot in the book (it's a big issue), but the actual act never happens.

Thank you! It's mainly for me...and I'm 29. This genre is really starting to push the envelope and I'm getting angry about it. I am trying to let the publishers understand that there needs to be a raiting system in place so that parents and anyone else who wants to read these novels knows beforehand what they are reading. It only makes since since video games, movies etc. have a raiting system...why not books for teens?!?

Absolutely true. They really should.
There are a lot of books in this list that does not have sex in it. I should know because I've READ them.
There are lots of books on here that aren't YA. Are people just putting their favourite books up or what? This is a good list, but the ones that have put Fifty Shades of "I'm not going to read it" shouldn't be putting this book on this list. It's adult, along with The Black Dagger Brotherhood. And if there isn't sex in the book (like some of the above people have mentioned) don't vote for it, because you're misleading people.

So, not really YA in that sense.
There is no sex in Onyx. Ok, the main characters sleep in the same bed and sometimes they get somewhat close to having it (kissing, touching etc) - but it never happens. It's like Twilight books one and 2. The side characters Dee and Adam have sex, but it isn't ever described. Dee just claims: "yes, we had sex" and that's all you'll ever hear about it.

Born at Midnight doesn't have sex in it either. Sure Della has said that she's done it. But that's it.

Super sutble it definitely is. I knew they were naked in this scene but I don't think they actually had sex as she needed him and herself to have skin to skin contact so she could save him from the poison that was killing him slowly. Because her abilities are that her body is likened to a bezoar stone that neutrelizes poisons.Though you are right, that paragraph was writren in such a vague way and it makes you interpret it in asuch a way, personally what do you think?
