Jessica City of Fallen Angels doesn't have sex in it. It may get close but there isn't a sex scene.

message 5: by Patricia (new)

Patricia ^ Did I miss the scene in VA where they have sex? Third and sixth book, okay. But first? oô

Amy Great that the adult books mentioned (Book#2 of the Night Huntress Series is still listed) in the comment section are no longer on the list, but now some of the titles from the Kate Daniels' series by Ilona Andrews is now on the list. And technically Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier isn't YA, either (although it is a wonderful book and is fine read for teens).

I read Shiver awhile back, and I don't recall any sex in it.

Yea I read this series when I was younger (maybe like 10 years ago?) and remember feeling pretty sneaky about it. I'm not sure if I read it now if it would still seem as scandalous, but there are definitely descriptions about feelings and desires emerging from young love.

They absolutely did have sex in Shiver. I have only read the first book in the series so far so I know I am not confusing it with the other 2 books. Plus I just read it last week and I remember it clearly.

IMO Beautiful Disaster is not YA. I know it is listed as YA, but it feels adult to me.

Rebecca ♥ Ash, Kishan, Warner ♥ Jessica wrote: "Does Iron Queen really?"

Yes they do. Although it is extremely vague with no detail, you at least know it happened.

message 18: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 26, 2011 09:27PM) (new)

I've added The Ballad of Young Tam Lin https://www.createspace.com/3661637, or as a Kindle download. It works as older YA. Since Lady Janet Dunbar starts as a virgin, and ends up pregnant, I'd say there's sex in it, but nothing is graphic or spelled out - you just can figure out that once the kissing slows down so the clothes can come off, they're not going to do the laundry. It's a great read for older YA, or any adult with romance in their hearts, and a yearning for something magical in the universe.

Jessica Rebecca wrote: "Jessica wrote: "Does Iron Queen really?"

Oh man, cuz I heard that it didn't.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy Yeah, "Beautiful Disaster" by Jamie McGuire really isn't a YA novel. Just because the protagonist is 18/19 (and her love interest is 20/21) doesn't always make it YA. A good chunk of the novel doesn't really much even relate to the average teenager.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Amethyst raises an interesting issue. What does the "average teenager" relate to? Which teenager? Where? When I was a teen, NONE of the people I hung out with were "average," yet none of them were the same in their deviations from the norm. Two guys were heavy stoners. Another was an engineer at the local independent radio station. I was a theater geek. One girl who hung out with us sometimes was a cheerleader (still don't know how that happened.) What was "average?" Is YA only the concerns of suburban white teens - the prom, catching a boyfriend, deciding when to do "IT?" How, then, does YA fanatasy fit in?

Or are we talking about adolescent universals - "I'm lonely, I'm confused, I'm abnormal?" If that is what the "average teenager" can relate to, than the field becomes huge. And then we get to the issue of who is making the definitions of what YA is, and how it works, and, ultimately, do we (consumers) want those definitions to lie only in the hands of publishers and critics?

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Relating to my post above, I'm curious - what books did you enjoy when you were in the YA range that were NOT YA? For me, The Lord of the Rings, Penguin Island (Anatole France), 3 Men in a Boat (Jerome K. Jerome), A Tale of Two Cities, and Pride and Prejudice (among many others). I also read YA crap, like the Heinlein "manhood" adventure books (Starman Jones, Starship Troopers).

message 23: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah I just read XVI by Julia Karr and it doesn't have sex in it. They talk about it a lot in the book (it's a big issue), but the actual act never happens.

A few of them are mistakes, which is unfortunate. But I keep this list up-to-date whenever I read something with sex. For ppl like you as well as or parents who want to know before letting their kids read them.

Rebecca ♥ Ash, Kishan, Warner ♥ OpinionatedMe wrote: "I just read XVI by Julia Karr and it doesn't have sex in it. They talk about it a lot in the book (it's a big issue), but the actual act never happens."

It could be that whoever added it thought the content was explicit enough to still warrant a warning.

T
Thank you! It's mainly for me...and I'm 29. This genre is really starting to push the envelope and I'm getting angry about it. I am trying to let the publishers understand that there needs to be a raiting system in place so that parents and anyone else who wants to read these novels knows beforehand what they are reading. It only makes since since video games, movies etc. have a raiting system...why not books for teens?!?

Absolutely true. They really should.

Jessica Does Bargains and Betrayals really have sex in it?

message 30: by AM (new)

AM 50 Shades of Grey is most definitely not a Young Adult book...

message 31: by Nic (new)

Nic There are a lot of books in this list that does not have sex in it. I should know because I've READ them.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

There are lots of books on here that aren't YA. Are people just putting their favourite books up or what? This is a good list, but the ones that have put Fifty Shades of "I'm not going to read it" shouldn't be putting this book on this list. It's adult, along with The Black Dagger Brotherhood. And if there isn't sex in the book (like some of the above people have mentioned) don't vote for it, because you're misleading people.

So, not really YA in that sense.

message 40: by Alex (new)

message 41: by Wren [t(he)y] (new)

Wren [t(he)y] In what universe is Sylvia day a young adult author?

message 42: by Marie (new)

Marie Orumaa There is no sex in Onyx. Ok, the main characters sleep in the same bed and sometimes they get somewhat close to having it (kissing, touching etc) - but it never happens. It's like Twilight books one and 2. The side characters Dee and Adam have sex, but it isn't ever described. Dee just claims: "yes, we had sex" and that's all you'll ever hear about it.

Rebecca ♥ Ash, Kishan, Warner ♥ Marie wrote: "There is no sex in Onyx. Ok, the main characters sleep in the same bed and sometimes they get somewhat close to having it (kissing, touching etc) - but it never happens. It's like Twilight books on..."

Katy and Daemon definitely have had sex. Although I think it was in Opal.

The Disappearing Snake...?

message 46: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Born at Midnight doesn't have sex in it either. Sure Della has said that she's done it. But that's it.

message 47: by Avalon (new)

Avalon Weston Yes

message 48: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Grave Mercy has sex in it?

Rebecca ♥ Ash, Kishan, Warner ♥ Nicole wrote: "Grave Mercy has sex in it?"

I think so. Its a bit confusing. Sometimes they are super subtle about it because its YA and they dont want to be too graphic. But with Grave Mercy, I think they went a little too subtle.

This is immediately after she found him in the tunnels nearly dead and she saved him.

"As I slip out of the rough, dark gown, I realize I have only the vaguest idea of how a woman lies with a man. even so, I cast my shift aside and gently push Duval back down — it takes no effort at all. Slowly, I lower my body onto his so that every part of us is touching."

message 50: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Super sutble it definitely is. I knew they were naked in this scene but I don't think they actually had sex as she needed him and herself to have skin to skin contact so she could save him from the poison that was killing him slowly. Because her abilities are that her body is likened to a bezoar stone that neutrelizes poisons.

Though you are right, that paragraph was writren in such a vague way and it makes you interpret it in asuch a way, personally what do you think?
