Valentina Heart It would be nice if people who add online fic to Goodreads marked stories as WIPs. Half of these probably won't get finished but for those of us who don't like reading only half of a story; could you mark it in a blurb or in a review somewhere???

Nemesis@ You truly are a life saver with your wip shelf;) Thank you;)

I know what you mean. I got caught out there a couple of times and to this day those suckers haven't been updated, grrrr, lol. First thing I do now before I look into them further is make sure they are complete. ;)

message 4: by Valentina (new)

Valentina Heart Me too. You have to actually go to the story page and the last chapter. Sometimes even if they don't have a 'complete' tag they will be finished, but mostly they won't and there isn't even an author's note explaining anything. It's really frustrating, because I read 40 chapters in a story which is missing the last two, and the year it was last updated - 2008. It's obvious it won't ever be finished and while it might be amazing and whatever, it's still half a story. I won't give 5 stars to a book without an ending.

The reason why I get especially annoyed is because some of the blurbs sound amazing, and I get all excited and interested only to get to the pages and realize the story isn't even close to being done.

message 5: by Moderatrix Lori (last edited May 08, 2011 02:10pm) (new)

Moderatrix Lori I hope that the person that is adding all of these to the GR database has obtained permission from the author before doing so. Any that are a WIP should clearly state that in the description and I'm not even sure that any unfinished stories should be added to the database since it's intended for novel length books.

Nemesis Moderatrix Lori wrote: "I hope that the person that is adding all of these to the GR database has obtained permission from the author before doing so. Any that are a WIP should clearly state that in the description and I..."

Being one of the persons who added on GR many of the listed books, I can say that including the info if a story is completed or not implies future edits here once that story was updated. I understand that many readers don't like investing time into unfinished or in-progress stories, or even taking a few moments checking for themselves, assuming that the info is available. So yes, I see that you're right in demanding that these details to be included.
As for in-progress or unfinished titles I keep a more subjective view. Novel length books in the m/m genre are becoming rare things. If short-stories can be added to GR, why shouldn't be the same for those fiction works that have over 100,000 words.

And regarding the author's permission, I don't think it's necessary because the story is not offered for download here. I don't see how some description and the link where it can be found could be considered as having a negative impact upon anyone, especially the writer, taking into consideration that he/she is the one who has offered his/her stories for free, has published them online, on a public account where anyone can have free access. I would agree with the need for permission if that story was offered to a limited group through a private profile and a direct accept/invite from the author.

message 7: by Ravyn (new)

Ravyn Hmmm...tricky tricky. Here's my two cents:

1) I definitely agree that "WIP" or "unfinished" stories should be clearly labeled. ("WIP" = author is still working on it vs. "unfinished" = author gave up on it.) That is a BIG deal.

2) I also think it's interesting that Lori brought up the question about whether incomplete stories should even be added to the Goodreads database. For the most part, I feel pretty strongly that people shouldn't be adding any and every random internet WIP that strikes their fancy. I mean, that has the potential to be completely crazy if every random tween FP "author" decides to add their 1-chapter WIP story to the database. HOWEVER, I would also say that I'm ok with some exceptions to the rule. There are some wildly popular and well-known WIP/unfinished stories out there, so those would be my exceptions. (For example, Captive Prince, The Last Pure Human, or Stupid Post It Notes.) Anyway, I know that's all totally subjective...but that's the best I've got.

3) About getting an author's permission before adding their story to the database...I've got to agree with Nemesis on that front. I think it's probably courteous to give them a heads up, if you feel like it. But I don't think it's absolutely necessary to get "permission" before adding a story to the database. I can't conceive of any reason why an author who publicly posts their work online would have reason to object.

message 8: by Td (new)

Td Oh, I love this list. I have to throw in my two cents, too. :)

I don't understand what the issue is. I was under the impression this is mostly what this particular list is for. A good read is a good read whether the work is published or not. There are some stories in here I thought were incredible and would've never found if not for this list. It would be nice if it was clearly stated that a story was a WIP or Unfinished, but that can quickly be confirmed for the most part on the story's home page. It's like researching any book that you are interested in. The postings here link to where the author is posting the story, you actually need permission for this? I would think that it would only increase traffic to their sites. Isn't that a good thing? This is actually very unclear to me. I really would like to know what the protocol is, wouldn't want to offend anybody or anything.

I would like to thank those who have taken the time to add these stories. I love to take a peek in here from time to time and see what catches my interest when I want something different. Most times I've been happily surprised.

Moderatrix Lori I guess it's not as important to get permission from the author if you're just linking to where the stories are. I still think it's common courtesy and if they were my stories, I would appreciate a heads up that a link was being posted here.

The issue of unfinished stories being added to the database is being discussed in the Librarian's group so an official policy may be somewhere down the road. Until then, it makes sense to me to go ahead and edit the description to indicate that it's a WIP. I realize that you can follow the link to the site and figure it out but why not just add it?

message 10: by Experiment BL626 (last edited May 28, 2011 12:46pm) (new)

Experiment BL626 I don't believe it's even common courtesy to give authors heads-up if their stories are being posted on Goodreads. We don't do that for published authors, why give the special treatment to unpublished ones? Makes no sense.

I agree on adding a WIP/Unfinished mark in the stories' title...but then again, I most prefer to just allowing completed stories only. Allowing WIP/Unfin stories on GR is just too messy.

message 11: by Blue (new)

Blue GhostGhost About getting an author's permission before adding their story to the database...I've got to agree with Nemesis on that front. I think it's probably courteous to give them a heads up, if you feel like it. But I don't think it's absolutely necessary to get "permission" before adding a story to the database. I can't conceive of any reason why an author who publicly posts their work online would have reason to object

Hmm...As an author who found a story of mine on here through google I have to say that on the one hand I am *extremely* flattered and touched someone would think it worthy of a Goodreads post. But I'm also a little horrified. I mean it's my first major writing effort and it's a rough draft I wrote during a very stressful time in my life. I posted it on AFF (without a proper editor) in order to get feedback in that context. I can roll with it being linked here. I put it on the internet for come who may after all. But it is not in any kind of shape to be compared with published works and I'm not sure waiting another year for me to make my edits wouldn't have been better for everyone? *Shrugs*

I don't believe it's even common courtesy to give authors heads-up if their stories are being posted on Goodreads. We don't do that for published authors, why give the special treatment to unpublished ones? Makes no sense.

It makes sense to me because when someone "publishes" a work in ebook or paper form they are calling it done-done and opening up that work to general critique. They have also most likely had the benefit of an editor or five. People post their writing online for lots of reasons and in a million different forms of "complete." Personally, I think it's nice to tell someone you are linking their draft to an established site like this. A wider audience is not always a good thing at some stages of the process.

I recently saw a negative review for a published work on Amazon that the reviewer based solely on a draft they had read years ago on AFF. I can't think of a more disrespectful way to treat an author that was seeking support from a writing community at an earlier stage in their efforts than to hold it against them post edit/publication.

I love having my writing open to the public because I get the most helpful criticism from the most random places by putting my work out there. But if I was writing in hopes of seeking publication, I probably wouldn't share it so freely in this climate and that makes me a little sad.

message 14: by Oco (last edited Mar 05, 2012 06:44pm) (new)

Oco I'm VERY late to the above conversation, but Blue, may I say, very well expressed. I'm okay with my own works being on GR--and I put a good face on it, but I would never have tried to publish one of them because to *me* it's not good enough. I'm a little bit appalled that I won't get much of a chance to ever rework and sell it because it has now been so widely distributed. I mean, I *could* but what's the point now that it is so well known in it's amateurish state?

I've even considered in the past whether I should remove it from the internet so that it can be removed from GR. I won't do it at this point, but GR is definitely stifling my willingness to put rougher and/or more experimental work up. I stopped posting at FP once I saw stuff going up at GR, for example. Still publish at LJ, but under a friends-lock, with the hope that that will prevent GR distribution (it has, so far, and I recommend the technique).

I'm not complaining about GR exposure, btw. It's been good for me. But it's not what every author wants, and it has its downsides -- for readers as well as authors. I think it'd be a courtesy to ask but don't believe that will ever happen. Paradigm shift -- scared new authors (especially the young ones) will just find new little caves to share with each other in.

Nemesis Emma wrote: "Someday Never Comes is being published: how do we get books taken off this list?"

It's enough to mention the books here. I'll remove them as soon as they get published or when the publisher/author give an official release date.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Re author permission: thanks for this conversation. It almost exactly mimics one I've been having on a group I belong to and has given me a bit of clarity around adding fanfic on here. I started out contacting authors but it's almost impossible to sustain that sort of communication long-term, particularly if you're a fast reader.

I agree with Nemesis, private profiles and locked pages are the boundary markers on internet access and works from those sources probably shouldn't be listed on here, but public archives are, well, public. Linking to those would generate as much collateral traffic as most LJ rec sites, I would think.

Oh and -- awesome list. Thanks for generating it, Nemesis.

I'm glad I could do something useful for the readers of online fics. Many of these stories deserve to be published, so having a list to make them more visible it seemed like a good start.

It's a great list, good to know there's so much out there.

This is all origific though, right? I need to find a similar list for all the ff I've been adding.

message 20: by Nemesis (new)

Nemesis There are also a few fanfics in an alternate universe. As long as they don't follow the original plots I guess it's okay to add them.

Charming Euphemism Notes:

(1) 100 Candles is not available at Chaobell.net anymore (nor anywhere else that I could find). The original Shousetsu BangBang story is still online, but does not have 15,000 words (it's at 11,000-ish).

(2) None of Dan Kirk's works are available at gayauthors.org anymore. He has a Yahoo group where he is reposting them, but they aren't truly publicly available at the moment (you have to join the group). Not sure how you want to handle that.

(3) Thanks so much for doing this, and for limiting it to longer works.

Not only free online titles could be added here, are allowed as well private or/and paid-for titles as long as they're not available for purchase as whole books. So Dan Kirk's stories are okay to stay. Too bad they're not at GA anymore, I didn't have the chance to read any of them.

Charming wrote: "(3) Thanks so much for doing this, and for limiting it to longer works."

At first I wanted to require even longer than this length, but I feared that many good short stories were left behind.

Kenny Deheart Dan Kirk's Yahoo is at http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/dkst...
For any who want to read the stories, you can download most of them from the site, including brand new stories :)

I also noticed that Dynasty of Ghosts by PL Nunn is listed, but it is a published novel. Should it be in this list?

You're right - I think this was originally offerred free, but now is only offerred for sale as the complete book. So I went ahead and deleted it, along with P.L. Nunn's other two "for sale" books. (Bloodraven and Neko)

Tailtiu Social Skills will be released and is no longer available.

First Kiss is released.

Traded is removed and no longer available

Nate Oh wow, great list! I've only read a couple of these, so now I have a huge 'to be read' list. Is it okay to only vote on a few and add to my votes later? I'm fairly new here so not sure how that works.

You may vote as many as you want, well no more than 100 that is, as Goodreads allows only up to that.

vcious The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek is available on paperback though it's free online. Does this disqualifies it to this list?

Traded is back on AFF under the name twisted, if you are talking about the Traded that was posted under the previous name Jennmarie who had their profile deleted?

Thanks for the awesome list BTW :)

Edit: I don't know whether to laugh or cry. AFF deleted twisted again claiming she is still under age where she is claiming she is now over age. Traded is now being put on Archive of our own under the name of JennaMarie. She is slowly putting her stories back online.

It sure does! Doesn't matter if it's free, it's published and this is why is not allowed on this list. Thanks for pointing it out!
