Laura Best dog books:
The Boss Dog, by MFK Fisher
Flush, by Virginia Woolf
Lad a Dog, by Albert Payson Terhune

message 2: by Martina (new)

Martina My fave is 101 Salivation, it's a collection of dogs photos by Rachael Hale. I think she made wonderful photographs of the dogs. The pictures always made me smile ;) I'm so grateful to have that book :)

message 3: by Derya (last edited Oct 17, 2010 09:15AM) (new)

Derya Flush: A Biography introduces us a great story, evolving around Elizabeth Barrett and her pet Flush. Yet, I cannot call it an ordinary "dog book", because it's heavily focused on the British social class system, and it has a strong philosophical depth.

I also loved Lad a Dog.

Julia, a dog lover Best Listopia list yet!!

Mark How about some kids books about dogs?

"Rosie, A Visiting Dog's Story" and "May I Pet Your Dog?"
by Stephanie Calmenson

message 7: by Karen (new)

Karen There are a couple of books on this list that have the word "dog" in the title that aren't really about dogs at all. "Dog Years' would be one of them, but it's a great book for other reasons!

There are numerous lists here that don't care about content as they only want the word in the title so that could be what caused the confusion. I just voted on one of those.
I hope a librarian will delete the ones that don't fit here. They are the only ones who can do it.

message 9: by Karen Gail (new)

Karen Gail Brown One Good Dog is a great book, also Water for Elephants is one of my all time favorite books.

message 10: by Karen Gail (new)

Karen Gail Brown Do, Kyle TRL, you will love it.

message 11: by Alice (new)

Alice Anna Quinlan wrote a good one - wasn't it just called Good Dog?

message 12: by Patti (new)

Patti The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant was a great book about the famous football player who was convicted of dog fighting. It gave a lot of information, some not so pretty about the ins and outs of the inhumane treatment of this terrible sport. But it did have a happy ending for many of his fighting dogs. Avery good read.

Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man by Michael Hingson was the best dog book I have read in quite a while. It's about a blind man who survived the 9-11 attack thanks to his Guide Dog who helped him and 76 others get out of Tower 2 before it went down and got him to safety. At the Dog Hero Awards this year his guide dog was awarded 1 award and ended up being the Hero of the Year!!! Get this book, you won't be sorry!!

message 13: by therese (new)

therese Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant is a wonderful book for children or anyone who has lost a beloved pet.

message 14: by Maddie (new)

Maddie Lou i love all those books i am reading a really good one now its about a dog !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 15: by Henryetta (new)

Henryetta There are books on the list that do not even mention a dog in the title or in the pages of the book. They seem to come for one member. One of the books that do not belong is "Fifty Shades of Grey"! Others are the Harry Potter books, Twilight, The Lovely Bones, The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splended Suns, The Life of Bees, etc. Hopefully the member will edit her list or a librarian will remove the books.

message 16: by Julie (new)

Julie Angel by my side by mike ligenfelter is a wonderful dog story as well.

message 17: by Carolina (new)

Carolina Why is Water for Elephants here?

message 18: by Yuliya (new)

Yuliya Carolina wrote: "Why is Water for Elephants here?"

Water for elephfants SHOULD BE DELETED from this list. There are a little about of the dog, but it's not a main line of story and in almost any books would be something about dogs

message 19: by Rosanne (new)

Rosanne pellicane She Came From Heaven/Rosanne Pellicane

A tribute to my dog Whimsey, but then I think all dogs are gifts from above.

message 20: by Carole (last edited Dec 13, 2012 02:38PM) (new)

Carole Pivarnik Great list! It sure brought back a few memories, scrolling through and seeing some of the dog books I read and loved as a kid (not to mention more recently)! Definitely worth a vote for many of them!

Added my own book, Doggitude, too.

Jay David Rosenfelds mystery series with lawyer Andy Carpenter and his faithful dog Tara

message 25: by Feather (new)

Feather Dust I love this list! Bravo!

message 26: by Julia (new)

Julia The Underneth by Kathi Appelt-Wonderful story! My daughter read this in 5th grade. Very sad, but a great read.
&
The Boy Who Spoke Dog by Clay Morgan (The Boy Who Returned from the Sea-2nd book) These are two books by son really enjoyed when he was in elementary school.

message 27: by Michele (new)

Michele A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas is good for this list

message 28: by Mary (new)

Mary Laiuppa The Ten Best Things about Barney is about the death of a pet CAT. Should not be on the dog list.

Quite a few of these other books should be removed simply because dogs are such a very small part of the book.

If Good Dog Carl et al makes the list, don't forget Paddy's Payday, also by Alexandra Day.

message 29: by Kathy (new)

Kathy My favorite is I'm Listening With a Broken Ear. It's a really touching story about what we learn from our dogs.

Three dog life was one of my favorites!!!!!

message 31: by Donna (last edited Jul 04, 2016 08:40PM) (new)

Donna Davis I was skeptical about the Harry Potter titles, but my spouse says there is really an important dog in some of them (page 2). Okay, fine.

But #221, Anna Karenina, is indefensible, and it's gone. NOT a dog story: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Not a dog book either: The Secret Life of Bees, from page 3.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

The system found and removed 8 duplicates.

Oh crimony. I love Twain too, but Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are NOT dog books. Behave yourselves, people.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

from page 4, as well as:

The complete work of Robert Frost is a dog book? Sure, and I'm the elephant man. Gone:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

#449, Fifty Shades of Gray. No.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Every time I tell myself I'm done editing and now I will just let myself vote, I see something that cannot stay here. The Illiad and the Odyssey, gone from p. 7.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Trolls. Who else would toss a bunch of presidential bios on the end of a dog book list? And not only presidents; we also have--or had--Alexander Hamilton:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Teddy Roosevelt:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

George Washington and John Adams

Rachel A. Does anyone know of a children's chapter book about a boy who owns a dog, and he later finds a three-legged dog. He's only allowed to keep one, so he chooses to keep the three-legged dog. It's been driving me crazy that I can't remember the title of it. I just remember that the book really upset me as a kid because I was upset that the boy gave up the dog he'd already had for a long time who must have loved him.

message 33: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Gotta say The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time isn't really a dog book (other than the dead one that started the whole thing)
