message 1: by Jason (new)

Jason these lists continue to be a source of utter bewilderment for me...who found the lord of the rings trilogy to be the most disappointing works they've ever read?....
what is it exactly you were expecting when you picked them up?...
i find this conclusion to be most baffling...

message 2: by Debbie (new)

Debbie twilight and harry potter ant the deathly hallows were not disapointing in the least

message 3: by Moon (new)

Moon I find that I have to agree with you on that point. Maybe they were expecting cotton candy fluff fantasy or something.

message 4: by Laura (new)

Laura Or maybe they were expecting a book written in a style that wasn't ponderous and dull.

message 5: by Sandi (new)

Sandi It's very disappointing when it seems like EVERYone likes a book and you read it and find it dull, derivative, or just not your style. It's especially disappointing when you pick up a book expecting to like it and you don't.

And, just because someone is disappointed in a book, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad book. It just means it's not someone's taste, or it was over-hyped, or the person just wasn't in the right frame of mind when he or she sat down to read it.

The books I found most disappointing were the ones I most looked forward to reading and they didn't live up to my expectations.

message 6: by Erica (new)

Erica wow I guess I love a lot of disappointing books...

message 7: by Slaiman (new)

Slaiman What !! Most of these Books are bestsellers and wonderful so who made the list obviously have a bad taste in books and i don't mean to rude.

message 8: by Sara (new)

Sara I loved a lot of these books...

somebody must be joking
bout this list

message 11: by Rachel (last edited Feb 14, 2009 10:21PM) (new)

Rachel Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance Cycle are some of the best books I have ever read!!!!!!!

message 12: by Kate (last edited Feb 18, 2009 02:10PM) (new)

Kate I don't think these are meant to be the most disappointing books you've *ever* read, just books that come highly recommended or get a lot of hype that end up falling flat for whatever reason. Overall, I liked the LOTR trilogy but The Two Towers was a definite low point (imho). Viva la difference!

message 13: by Kelly (new)

Kelly How in the world could Lord of the Rings be on this list of the most disappointing books. I mean... Really?

message 14: by arianna (new)

stop reading the lists then.

thank you! i'm so glad you said that! its very frustrating to see all the people leaving comments flaming other because of dissenting opinions, or people behaving that their opinions are the only one that matter and you are mentally deficient if you don't agree, thank you again.

everyone who visits the list is welcome to add to it as well as vote on books....

message 18: by Lorinda (new)

Lorinda People kept telling me that Twilight wasn't YA fiction, or wasn't romance, or wasn't dreadful. Frankly, they were all wrong. I feel much the same way about Twilight as I do about Harry Potter: if you enjoy it as great literature past a certain age, you need to read more. If you're younger, or it's a guilty pleasure, or nostalgic to you, that's a different matter. I found it to be the most blatant of niche wish-fulfillment fantasies.

message 19: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I agree... And Bella's character is so pathetic and needy and weak... the more the series went on the more her character flaws became overwhelmingly annoying. Those people who put Stephanie Meyers on a pedestal definately have a lot to learn.

message 20: by Lining (new)

Lining I was horribly dissappointed by Twilight... a friend of mine recommended it to me, and I asked her like 10 times if she thought it was the right book for me... and when I bought and read it, I kind of lost faith in recs... :(

don't loose fait in rec's just spend more time in your firend so they know you better... i was friends with someone for years who made me read eldest upon pains of death... i read it and got pissed of at him for days, he was very shocked and awed, next time he'll make a better rec.

message 22: by Linda (new)

Linda I've got to agree with Lorinda - If you found Twilight (or Harry Potter for that matter) to be great literature, you are either an immature reader (not to intending to be critical, but more as a matter of fact) or just need to challenge yourself to read more. This discussion is exactly the same as with movies - what you take away from a book has a lot to do with what expectations you had going into it.

message 23: by ♥BookGeek♥ (new)

♥BookGeek♥ The Looking Glass Wars? Huh????
I just love that series! Don't ask why, I just do.

message 24: by Rachel (last edited May 14, 2009 10:26AM) (new)

Rachel Myers Some of my favorites are here, as are some truly dreadful and disappointing titles, such as Twilight and The Alchemist which are highly, highly over-read and overrated. Twilight, which is such a rage among the tween and early teen set, is like feeding sexist poison to Harry Potter fans who are all craving a new series. I took it as an excuse to discuss how not to be a friend and the perpetuation of the myth of female passivity with my 12-year-old. But then she pointed out as she read her way through the series--"You say these books are terrible, then you say oooooh, give me the next one!" Maybe it's just an entre into romance novels for the younger set. I still say feh!

message 25: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Why do you all make a dissapointing book site if your all just going to get mad and ticked off at it? i mean really! Every one has different oppinions on a differnt book. Let those people have there opionin! you have your on opinion and well if you like the book then you like ,but if you didn't like it oh well!
its just a book it was made wheter you like it or not. Your suppose to read the book and imagine the scenes and plots in your head. You all just make a book complicated but it's really not.

Pat Najarro Linda wrote: "I've got to agree with Lorinda - If you found Twilight (or Harry Potter for that matter) to be great literature, you are either an immature reader (not to intending to be critical, but more as a ma..."

Books like Twilight are a no brainer read.....it is entertaining. You read it and throw it away. Nothing wrong with this, sometimes you need a break from deeper reading. But to put it in a great literature catagory is silly.

message 27: by ♥BookGeek♥ (new)

♥BookGeek♥ Twilight, is NOT great liturature. I know. It wasn't disapointing in the least but it wasn't THE greatest lit there ever was. Twilight was entertaining. Harry Potter however, I know a friend who says that it is the most amazing book she's ever read and I thought she was joking. If you consider Animal Farm and other classics to be great lit, you do NOT think that HP or Twilight is great lit. You're just messed up if you do.

message 28: by Monica (new)

Monica Jason wrote: "these lists continue to be a source of utter bewilderment for me...who found the lord of the rings trilogy to be the most disappointing works they've ever read?....

There is a difference between worst book ever and just being let down after all the hype. When there are expectations going in, like inevitably with something like The Lord of the Rings, some people may just find that it wasn't what they expected or hoped for. This isn't a 'most dissapointing ever, ever, ever' list but more of a 'bummer, I thought I'd really like that' list.

message 29: by Christina (new)

Christina a good deal of books are this list were actually very good..
yeah they may have dragged on at points but worst book EVER?! hardly

message 30: by arianna (new)

This is not the worst book ever list, this is the books that dissapointed us list. Here is a link to the worst books ever list; http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2.... please go here to preach.

message 31: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Ya, even books considered "worst books ever" are normally liked by a lot. Other whys, nobody would have read it in the first place.

message 32: by ♥BookGeek♥ (new)

♥BookGeek♥ I also realize that a lot of people hate books that other people love with a passion. And I'm not talking about popular books either. I don't see a lot of books that I love and other people don't like on this list.

message 33: by Heather (new)

Heather Who made the list half these books are actually good and not a dissapontment.

message 34: by Mnmsully (new)

Mnmsully i guess a lot of my favorite books are dissapointing. Never mind that though, and the other million fans of these books, lets all listen to some negative nobody who doesn't know the difference between dissapointing and good. of course evrybody has there own opinion but i'd like to know what does this person like, cause it seems every half good book is on here.

message 35: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Breaking Dawn...Stephenie Meyer sold out at the end!

message 36: by Heather (last edited Jul 11, 2009 09:56PM) (new)

Heather Twilight is soooooooooooooooo not a dissapointing book and it never will be!!!!!

message 37: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Hair I agree with some...not so much on others. Wicked was definately disappointing, with all of the needless sex. I don't need three chapters of it, thanks. I enjoyed Twilight when I read it, before the hype, now I'm sick of it. I very much enjoyed the rest of Mitch Albom's works, not so much Five People. I agree with this list, to a degree.

message 38: by Nicole (new)

Nicole "Breaking Dawn" is disappointing!

I agree, Twilight is entertaining...it's like watching reality TV. Every so often you gotta have a guilty pleasure. I had high hopes for the Twilight series although the end was utterly disappointing!

message 40: by Cindymb (new)

Cindymb Wow! You really didn't like Life of Pi! It's on here twice (so far). :)

message 41: by Heather (last edited Jul 23, 2009 11:49PM) (new)

Heather Nicole wrote: ""Breaking Dawn" is disappointing! "

Sorry nicole but for me breaking dawn was good but it probably done without the birth scene details otherwise a pretty good book

message 42: by Travis (new)

Travis It seems that people see these lists as a chance to just blast books they don't like, rather than actually list books that disappointed them. I mean, if you read Twilight expecting you won't like it, then it's not really a disappointment when that ends up to be the case.

Books that should be here are ones that you had high expectations for but just didn't deliver.

Amelia, the pragmatic idealist all 3 LOTRs are on here?!?!?!?! what is the *MATTER* with the world today (runs around in a confused hysterical circle)

message 44: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Tony Hillerman is one of my all-time favorite authors and I believe every one of his books is on this list. I obviously don't agree, but then I guess I don't have to. I agree that people get started on a book due to other people's comments, or ads, or whatever. When you find a book you really like, just read everything by that author and enjoy it. Going through these lists doesn't mean I agree at all, but the listings sometimes remind me of something I read and loved.

message 45: by Lucille (new)

Lucille For me, the books that disappoint me the most are ones that are in a series, or ones by authors that i have read and liked. I don't tend to get as disappointed by really popular books that people rave about, because I figure that they might have a different opinion to me. Series', on the other hand, means that i have continued to read because i enjoy them, and then the author decides to write something that just doesn't work, and it makes me sad. the two biggest examples that i can think of are Breaking Dawn, and Blood Promise. Both do NOT live up to the expectations and excitement that i had when i picked them up on the very first day of sales.

message 46: by June Junebug (last edited Sep 13, 2009 12:09AM) (new)

June Junebug Aww. I loved Life Of Pie. Oh well, you can't please everybody.

Twilight Series: I felt like I was reading a 13-year-old's diary. There is no originality and this is completely anti-vampire (no fangs, walks in sunlight, unaffected by garlic, and sparkle!?). Completely and utterly disappointed that it got hype that it didn't deserve.

Catcher In The Rye: Pointless book, really. The protagonist droned on and on about nothing. He made nothing of his life, therefore, he was miserable. Reading it made me just as miserable, if not, more so.

The Great Gatsby: A protagonist that envies the rich? A whole clique full of nihilists? A pack of wolves who have an insatiable hunger for more wealth? No thanks.

That's the point. It's a critique of the consumerist society. And he didn't envy the rich, per-say, he just loved Daisy and had to be rich to have her.

BoekenTrol Sandi wrote: "It's very disappointing when it seems like EVERYone likes a book and you read it and find it dull, derivative, or just not your style. It's especially disappointing when you pick up a book expecti..."

I totally agree with you. The fact that I'm disappointed in a book doesn't mean that the book is bad, it means that it didn't live up to the expectations I had of it before I started reading.

The reasons for that are many: just not in the mood for that particular book, disappointment because I liked the earlier book(s) of the same authorbetter than this one, the book did not set off my 'in mind movie', or I find that the book I started reading did not meet the expectations the hype was telling about. The books I vote for are books I was disappointed in, which means that I actually read them, or did a serious attempt to read them.

Sometimes I find myself swimming against the current when I dislike a book that everyone else around me likes a lot. There are other times when I go along with the flow and like the book that others like too. Reading is something very personal, there are books I like, books I dislike and books that I had expected to be better. But that is entirely personal. As long as I keep my opinion in the I-form, nobody should be offended. After all, we live in a free world where everybody is entitled to his or her opinion on things, as long as it is expressed with care and respect.
It would be nice if people would understand that there are as many opinions on a book (for example) as there are people living on this planet. Then there would be no need to attack one another. Instead people could have heated but respectful discussions on books and maybe learn from one another.
