Best Unappreciated Books
This is a list for books of any genre or time that deserved to be praised but flew in under the radar. These books weren't on any best seller lists or acclaimed by Oprah and their authors aren't household names, but they deserve all that and more.

Lobstergirl The Road? Persuasion? The Red Tent? The Shadow of the Wind? A Clockwork Orange? The Historian? Unappreciated? They're all bestsellers.

message 2: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix I had a similar comment on here at one time, but the list owner deleted it, one supposes.

message 6: by K.D. (last edited May 24, 2011 10:30PM) (new)

K.D. Absolutely Although this is a nice idea, please review the list once again. Lobstergirl has a point. Being in the bestsellers list means that the book was appreciated by the readers. Some of the books are also included in the Oprah list like "The Road" and "Million Thousand Pieces". Some are also in Newsweek's 100 Top Novels List (aka Metalist 100). "Mother's Milk" is included in the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.

So, this puts doubt on what you mean by "unappreciated".

message 7: by Katty (new)

Katty Well, some of them might have been on here before they were well-known since the list was made in 2008. But yeah, some are ridiculous. The Road? That was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Persuasion is considered a classic and Jane Austen is most certainly a household name. I like the idea for the list, but I wish people read the description and knew how to vote.

message 8: by Themis-Athena (Does not and never will own a Kindle) (last edited Aug 15, 2011 08:28AM) (new)

Themis-Athena (Does not and never will own a Kindle) There's another list called Really Underrated Books where a book only qualifies as "underrated" if it has fewer than 1,000 ratings here on GR. Not a single one of the top 25 books of this list would make the cut on that other one (and all in all, only 23 of the first 100 books on this list -- i.e., less than a fourth -- would qualify for inclusion there).

Indeed, eight of the first ten books on this list wouldn't even make the cut for inclusion in the companion list to the above-mentioned one, "Moderately Underrated Books", where a book only qualifies if it has fewer than 10,000 GR ratings. (And all in all, on that particular list, only 38 of the first 100 books on this one here -- i.e., still less than 50% -- would qualify for inclusion.)

The number of GR ratings certainly isn't ALL it comes down to in determining whether a given book is getting all the attention we feel it should be due -- but in addition to things such as book awards and sales figures, they sure are a useful criterion; at least operating on the assumption that "rating" a book means I've read it and am rating it in order to share with others on GR whether I would or would not recommend the book (or I've at least placed it on my "to read" shelf, which I think qualifies as a "rating" by GR standards as well, and at a minimum indicates some level of awareness and interest in the book).

And looking at it from the opposite direction, virtually all of the top books of this list are actually at or near the top of the lists for the 200 (!) MOST POPULAR books of their respective years of publication (see 1999, 2001 and 1997 for the top three entries ... and that's just here on GR; i.e., not even mentioning the NY Times Bestseller lists and similar things).

So yes, currently this list (or at a minimum a good portion of its very first page) arguably looks pretty much like the opposite of what one would expect to find in a list of "unappreciated" books.

The question is what, if anything, can or should be done about that. Jade, you created the list in the first place ... any ideas or preference? Is this what you had in mind when you first created the list?

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie @K.D. Agree with you!

message 10: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ Katty wrote: "Well, some of them might have been on here before they were well-known since the list was made in 2008. But yeah, some are ridiculous. The Road? That was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Persuasion is c..."

I agree with you in your assessment of Austen as a household name, but I support Persuasion on the list because I feel it is probably her best work but it has been overshadowed by her other works and is not appreciated quite as it should be.

message 11: by Anne (new)

Anne L hmm... unappreciated as in what sense?

message 12: by Judy (new)

Judy Many of the books on this list do not seem under appreciated to me, they have been read by nearly everyone! I only added or voted for books that I thought were excellent but that don't seem to have been read by anyone I know.

message 13: by Booklovinglady (last edited Apr 02, 2012 10:28AM) (new)

Booklovinglady I fully agree with Lobstergirl. The first thing I noticed when I started browsing the list is that there are so many well-known titles on it (and all with very high ratings). That hardly qualifies as 'unappreciated' in my book. I noticed The Importance of Being Earnest to be on the list, as well as The mill on the floss, The Great Gatsby, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Tess of the D'Urbervilles and The Mayor of Casterbridge, and those classics definitely do not qualify as 'unappreciated'. These titles have been reprinted ever since they were first published! But I also saw The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh, to name a more modern/recent title. I mean, come on people... Amitav Ghosh is one of India’s best-known writers and his books are defintely not 'unappreciated'. But there are lots of titles like this on the list, unfortunately.

Time someone (the list owner maybe) cleaned up this list...? Hard job though, I'll admit that.

message 14: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I just deleted a bunch of bestsellers....that seems safe, at least. Since the description specifically says "not on any best seller lists"!

More need to go but it's very time consuming...

I deleted a bunch of books appearing on the Oprah, NY Times and Publishers Weekly lists as well. Would by no means want to restrict the notion of "bestseller" to the lists specifically referenced here, though ... and there are also still plenty of authors on this list whose names most definitely are "household names" and whose books IMHO should therefore vanish from this list as well, for this reason alone!

Amber I feel like any book on this list that has over 5000 ratings, is probably not so "unappreciated" any more.

Agreed ... The threshold for GR's "Moderately Underrated" list is between 1,000 - 10,000 ratings. But with 5,000 ratings, you can certainly no longer say a book has "flown under the radar!"

message 49: by Ratkin (new)

Ratkin Gee, folks, thanks for all of that research. It sure took a lot of the fun out of this list! Is it somehow disqualifying that a book that would get you puzzled looks in any bookstore in America was a best-seller in 1910? Does that make it overly appreciated in the here and now? How about a book that was greatly beloved by critics, but sold so poorly that the author went back to his/her day job? Is it appreciated or underappreciated?

My point is that 'underappreciated' is in the eye of the beholder. We are, pretty much by definition, a group of avid readers. A book that receives 1,000 ratings here can still be underappreciated by the general public, which was my automatic, mental definition of the term when I selected my contributions to the list. I listed books that I - - my favorite critic, after all -- consider underappreciated.

Go and set stringent limits for your definition of 'underappreicated' if you like, but I think that it will greatly reduce contributions to the list. The value in a list like this is in giving a means to consider what might be on their personal TBR list. Limit the list and you limit its value.
