message 1: by Diana (new)

Diana I think I'd only be interested in reading Stardust and A Walk To Remember, I don't really like reading books just because the movie made it popular.

message 2: by Anita (new)

Anita I've read a few books because the movie left me with questions. But mostly if I loved the movie I'll read the book. If I HATED the movie? I am so not reading the book.

But once in a while, The movie makes me go "huh? that makes no sense? How'd they get there?" so I go read the book. And I sometimes like the book BETTER.

But mostly, If I LOVE the book, I avoid the movie at all costs (Percy Jackson for instance. LOVE the books. Heard the movie changed EVERTYHING and left huge, gaping holes in the storyline. WON'T be seeing that thing. EVER!!! Leave me my innocence!!!!!)

message 3: by Max (new)

Max C all the movies i listed were only the ones I watched I haven't read any of these books

message 4: by Hayes (new)

Hayes Susanna... you haven't read GWTW? The book is much better than the movie, really it is!

message 5: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Mar 26, 2010 12:33PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads No, I've never read Gone with the Wind. It's on Mt. TBR, though.

Have they actually made movies of all those Laurell K. Hamilton books? I wasn't aware of it.

message 6: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca Susanna wrote: "Have they actually made movies of all those Laurell K. Hamilton books? I wasn't aware of it."

At one time they were planning to make a tv movie based on "Guilty Pleasures", but the plans fell through. I'm going to remove those from the list.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yes, Circle of Friends is a movie. With Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnell.

message 8: by Ayat (new)

Ayat Mahmoud did "The five people you meet in heave" got turned into a movie?!

message 9: by Madliberator (new)

Madliberator Didn't know all these were books first. :(

message 10: by Yanet (new)

Yanet i got 31 book on my list. i had no idea some of this movie where books.

message 11: by Melita (new)

Melita Unless the book is popular, a classic, or part of the canon...we don't know whether a film was a novel before. =D

Sometimes a film spurs me on to read the novel which is usually children or young adult books like Harry Potter.

message 12: by Lobstergirl (last edited Jun 15, 2010 10:04PM) (new)

Lobstergirl If I see the movie first, that's usually a death knell for the book, because if I really care about the book I'll make sure to read it first.

message 13: by Desiree (new)

Desiree It is very rare that I'll read the book after I see the movie. There are a couple here and there that are in my TBR pile but it's very few.

Most of these I had no idea were books first.

message 14: by Maurizio (matemati) (last edited Jul 21, 2010 04:22PM) (new)

Maurizio (matemati) LOL I love this list !
Honestly, I didn't know some of those movies were taken from books either :)
And I've got to admit, sometimes I just watched the movie because I was too lazy to read the book...but that happened _very_ long ago...

Well, now I guess I've got to mark some of them as 'to-read'

message 15: by Allegra (new)

Allegra I usually have a "No watching the movie until I read the book first" policy, but I guess I broke the rule on a few of these...I didn't even realize some like Slumdog Millionaire and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were books. And some books I didn't realize had movies too like The Invisible Man.

message 16: by Nawrast (new)

Nawrast I prefer to read the book at first than see the movie. if i see the movie I will never read the book!

message 17: by Hala (new)

Hala Ghattas other than The Lord of The Rings, i don't think any movie has given justice to a good book.

Am surprised A Beautiful Mind is taken from a book, that would be an interesting read to see how the writer would cover up for the plot, as the movie director did it in a very clever way, i tend to think it is difficult to do the same when writing. Am inticed to read the book now

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I still cannot make the NEW AND IMPROVED listopia work. Before it was improved I had no problem but now I can only vote. I was just trying to add Because of Winn Dixie but no luck. Why is it new and improved never works for me.

Half Asleep

Allegra wrote: "I usually have a "No watching the movie until I read the book first" policy, but I guess I broke the rule on a few of these...I didn't even realize some like Slumdog Millionaire and Chitty Chitty B..."

Same for me. So many movies I had no idea they were books first. Very rarely is the movie as good as the book but just lately I have found a few where the movie was better and was shocked.

message 20: by Grace (new)

Grace Novelli I loved a lot of the movies on this list. Half of them I had no idea had a book to it, namely Apollo 13, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Angels & Demons.
Angels & Demons is one of my favorite movies of all time. Its amazing. I especially did not expect Shutter Island to be a book. It was also very amazing, yet confusing. A lot of these books I've only read the book, not the movie, or the other way around, or both.

message 21: by Tasha (new)

Tasha the last song novel was made for the movie so that doesn't seem to fit with this list.

message 22: by Anna (last edited Jan 22, 2011 06:02AM) (new)

Anna Wells I think its true 99% of the time that if you watch the movie first you hate the book and visa versa

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

The thing is, I can't stop voting, hahaha. There are so many of these that I didn't know where books it's not even funny.

message 24: by Resa (new)

Resa I only voted for the ones I have seen but hadn't read. That was alot. Most of which I have no intention what so ever of reading. Sad but true. :)

message 25: by Namida... (new)

Namida... really good list. who would've thought that Catch me if you can, or the pursuit of happiness were books?! i think most movies that have a great or deep story behind them were originally books, other movies depend on other things rather than the story (well not all of them!) for instance i should have guessed that pay it forward was a book no other way could they have thought of that idea and just brought it to the screens.

message 26: by Sara (new)

Sara I think the list should be longer then this.

message 27: by Rarietty (new)

Rarietty I voted for Shrek because NOBODY seems to know that it was based off a picture book by William Steig.

Shrek! by William Steig

message 28: by Rachael (new)

Rachael I voted for the books that I have no intention of reading, but have seen the movies to go with them. They were all good movies too..

message 29: by Lila (new)

Lila Brantley Diana wrote: "I think I'd only be interested in reading Stardust and A Walk To Remember, I don't really like reading books just because the movie made it popular."

Stardust is a great read. :)

message 30: by Orli (new)

Orli If it looks good i usually always read the book first, in very rare cases (nick & norah's infinite playlist and because of winn dixie) i have loved the movie so much that i read the book afterwards and both were great but its certainly a different reading experience... there were only 10 books on here whose movie i saw without ever reading the book, most of which i didnt even know were based on books, of course there are also on lot on this list where i havent read the book or seen the movie... and a few where ive only read the book

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Red Riding Hood

I don't know if I will read the new book but I will sure buy the DVD when it comes out.

message 32: by Parvathy (new)

Parvathy If I get even a hint that the book is going to be made in to a movie I read the book immediately so that I can criticize the movie. Now seeing the list I realize I have watched a lot of movies without having even the slightest idea that they were books first. Sure I will read some of the books mentioned but that will be because the movie was too confusing.

message 33: by Rinni (new)

Rinni i think the book is always better than the movie. It doesn't matter,if i watch the movie first or read it.

But if i don't like the movie i won't bother reading it.

message 34: by Rarietty (last edited Sep 05, 2011 05:01AM) (new)

Rarietty Lila wrote: "Diana wrote: "I think I'd only be interested in reading Stardust and A Walk To Remember, I don't really like reading books just because the movie made it popular."

I'm reading Stardust and then watching the movie to compare the two. It's really good so far. And good far me because I love fairy tale retellings.

message 35: by Rola (new)

Rola Anybody knows if "27 dresses" was based on a novel or not?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Doesn't look like it.

message 37: by Rola (new)

Rola :(
Thanks for your care Susanna

message 38: by PhobicPrerogative (last edited Apr 02, 2013 11:17PM) (new)

PhobicPrerogative For me, there's no point in reading the book after I watch the movie...Didn't realize that some of the movies I've watched were based on books!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Hollywood has always made movies out of books.

I prefer it to their making movies of old TV series most of the time!

message 40: by Amalie (last edited Nov 10, 2011 05:39AM) (new)

Amalie Wow! A Cool List! I just added The Last of the Mohicans (The best movie ever!) I'm surprised it's not in the list and The Scarlet Letter which I loved but have no desire to read.

message 41: by Merle (new)

Merle Redwing Most times, if I really love a book, I won't go see the movie. I don't want to ruin my experiences with the book by having someone's interpretation of characters and plots running around in my head.

message 42: by Lila (new)

Lila Cyclist I'm glad to find this vote. And so far, I've voted 69 movies. I know that Some movies were originally from books, like Fantastic Mr. Fox, Harry Potter series, Time Traveler's Wife, etc, but I was shocked to know that Green Mile, December Boys, The Blind Side, empire of The Sun and some others are from books.

U have some e-books for those movies, but it seems that I don't intend to read the books since I enjoyed the movies, like The Phantom of The Opera, Time Traveller's Wife, The Kite Runner, etc.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash

What do you do when the movie has a totally different name? The movie is: A Christmas Story and it is super funny. I need to read the book.

message 44: by Kitty (last edited Jan 04, 2012 11:53AM) (new)

Kitty I feel so ashamed. I've only read a few of these, yet I've seen 49 of these film adaptations. I didn't even realize that some of them were based on books.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Same for me Kitty. There are so many movies I have seen and I get the book later when I find out there is one. In a few cases I much preferred the movie! Like The English Patient and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

The movie wasn't that bad, they changed Annabeth a bit and left some of the minor exploring out

message 47: by amara (new)

I disagree. There are a lot of movie adaptations (I, Robot, War of the Worlds, Ella Enchanted, Stuart Little, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Three Musketeers, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Dracula, etc.) that actually have very little in common with the books on which they are supposedly based. In my opinion, it's usually worth reading the book even if you saw the movie first. I like to compare the two and analyze the changes made in film adaptations.
