795030 Riddle of the Sands, published in 1903, belongs on this list, but is being disallowed by Goodreads.

why would goodreads disallowed it? pls enlighten me

message 3: by Susanna (new)

1109068 They probably don't have the original date of publication on it as 1903. Happens sometimes.

message 6: by Susanna (new)

1109068 And why would you think this list is a joke?

message 7: by Bettie (new)

1108123 Yes - I think I would like to know why this has reached the heady heights of 'joke' status.

According to my searches, although Riddle of the Sands was written in 1903, it was not published until 1915. I think this is a moot point. To my mind, if the date of writing is known and that differs from the publication date, it should be the former date that is accepted. After all the author was writing the work in the context of that earlier date. If one always took the publication date as being sacrosanct, we should have, for instance, no chronology for Shakespeare's plays as none were published in his lifetime and there is a great deal of difference in the plays written in Elizabeth's reign from those written in James's reign because of both the context in which they were written and the developing maturity of the writer.!

1232584 The Secret Garden wasn't published until 1911.

That was in book form. It was serialised in the autumn of 1910 and we don't know when, before that, it was finished. I think we can allow it to squeak in, don't you?

message 11: by Janna (new)

1232584 Well, I guess, but I don't see why it can't just be on the 1910s list...

1109068 Weird, the OP date is now 1911, yet it still registers votes on this list. Interesting.
