Antoine wrote: "Riddle of the Sands, published in 1903, belongs on this list, but is being disallowed by Goodreads."According to my searches, although Riddle of the Sands was written in 1903, it was not published until 1915. I think this is a moot point. To my mind, if the date of writing is known and that differs from the publication date, it should be the former date that is accepted. After all the author was writing the work in the context of that earlier date. If one always took the publication date as being sacrosanct, we should have, for instance, no chronology for Shakespeare's plays as none were published in his lifetime and there is a great deal of difference in the plays written in Elizabeth's reign from those written in James's reign because of both the context in which they were written and the developing maturity of the writer.!
Janna wrote: "The Secret Garden wasn't published until 1911."That was in book form. It was serialised in the autumn of 1910 and we don't know when, before that, it was finished. I think we can allow it to squeak in, don't you?
