Big Fat Books Worth the Effort
Weigh in to rate those long long books you slogged through to help others know if they were worth the effort. The idea, of course, is to bring the best to the top.

Thom Dunn WILL SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW PLEASE REMOVE Theodore Sturgeon's More Than Human from this list--It's a fine book, but only 192 pp. long.

Also Peter Mayle, A Dog's Life.....These are NOT "big fat" novels.....!!!

message 2: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Gone.

"Never Let Me Go" wasn't that long....

and Crime and Punishment was sort of long, but not exactly a doorstop! My paperback copy can't be more than an inch thick.

Thank you so much. I very much appreciate your efforts, especially here where the idea is to actually HELP readers of long books to head for the ones most deserving of attention. It looks as if someone Spammed this list with a bunch of really short books, maybe just by accident. They cause no harm, but I like a clean, clear list. Anyway, thanks again, Thom

message 4: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor Year of Wonders is a great book, but it's really pretty short - 300+ pages

Lobstergirl And now it's gone....

message 6: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Lobstergirl wrote: "And now it's gone...."

Can I prevail on you one more time--I don't know how long it takes--and ask you to remove, with regret, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT from this list. People seem to be piling on to it, many not realizing that lifting it poses no health hazard. Again, I greatly appreciate your efforts and look forward to the day when I can ding these myself. Apologies to all who love C & P as I do, but it just doesn't belong on this list, moreover if the line gets blurred, eventually it gets erased.

Hayes And Hitchhiker's Guide?

message 9: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Hayes wrote: "And Hitchhiker's Guide?
"

Dear Hayes, I'm not a great fan of H. Guide, but I THINK it's one connected story....Am I wrong ? Certainly one "fictional Universe" even if it is one big goofball of a mis-en-scene. Let me know what you think. Thom D.

message 10: by Travis (last edited Oct 18, 2009 04:22PM) (new)

Travis While I love the list feature here on goodreads, I really wish they'd let the creators set criteria for some of these. Goodreads has the page count on file, it'd be cool if any book submitted could be checked with the database to be sure it was over 500 pages. Do people just not pay attention to the lists purpose?

The Thirteenth Tale is only around 400 pages. Fablehaven 3 is almost 500, while the second is about 50 away, but the first one is also on the list and it's only around 350 pages. And as mentioned, The Hitchhikers guide is very short, only a bit above 200 pages. If the anthology was selected then it'd break 500, but the listed title is just the one short book. If a series is available in a single volume of great heft, then I say vote away, but that volume should be chosen and not the individuals. For instance, for the Hitchhikers Guide series, you could choose ISBN 9780345453747 which is a single volume with all 5 books in it weighing in at 832 pages.

Thom Dunn Travis wrote: "While I love the list feature here on goodreads, I really wish they'd let the creators set criteria for some of these. Goodreads has the page count on file, it'd be cool if any book submitted could..."

Well, Travis, I couldn't agree with you more. As the list's creator, I have a vested interest...2 suggestions: Vote for long books only, 500+ has always been my dividing line. and 2) Get a skilled GR Librarian to delete any that have creeped up in the queue, and 3) Ignore the lower end----There, all 3 of my 2 suggestions. Peace, Thom

message 12: by Franky (new)

Franky This is ridiculous, How did The Host make it onto this list? IMO it is light reading...

War and Peace, Atlas Shrugged etc are challenging and long, which the category name implies.

I liked The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy just as much as everyone else, but is that reason enough to include it or something similar (think Twilight) in every category?

Thom Dunn Franky wrote: "This is ridiculous, How did The Host make it onto this list? IMO it is light reading...

Dear Franky, I know a skilled librarian who will come and blow off any bogus titles that start to gain a following and climb in ratings. Twilight is a spamming problem on many lists, as is the Book of Mormon and the Bible, etc. I don't want to call on him too often, but rest assured this is my list and I started it for the PRACTICAL purpose of advising people on LONG books. Suggest you ignore the 1-vote clutter that seems to trail off many lists, like a tail on a kite. It does no harm.

message 14: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor Hitchhikers Guide only has about 225 pages, should it be on this list?

message 15: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Eleanor wrote: "Hitchhikers Guide only has about 225 pages, should it be on this list?"

Well, Eleanor, I think the title is being used as a stand-in for the whole series....I hesitate to say that Twilight would qualify on that basis, because one could argue that ANY series where the protagonist--like many detectives--grows throughout.
Since I don't want this list overwhelmed with book series-es, I'd vote for ruling them out. Incidentally, there already is a list for Best series, etc. Cherryh's Pride of Chanur is an intesting case. Originally she WANTED to publish the whole thing as one book, but her editor said No. Now you can get the whole three-book series AS one under the title The Chanur Saga. Going forward, let us seek concensus on what THOSE WHO ADD MOST to the list decide to include. Peace. Thom D.

Thom Dunn Thom wrote: "Franky wrote: "This is ridiculous, How did The Host make it onto this list? IMO it is light reading...

SECOND OPINION: The Host clearly qualifies as a LONG book at 600+ pages. Length and unity are the only litmus qualifiers here. Quality, genre, age level, etc. are entirely up to the voters.

message 17: by Jenni (new)

Jenni Shantaram should be here!

message 18: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Jenni wrote: "Shantaram should be here!"

It has 4 votes Jenni...why don't you make it 5 ?

message 19: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Likewise, Bishop's Black Jewel trilogy is only long if you have all three volumes together.

And I think while some of the YA entries here have a high page count they don't actually take long to read.

message 20: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Miriam wrote: "Likewise, Bishop's Black Jewel trilogy is only long if you have all three volumes together.

And I think while some of the YA entries here have a high page count they don't actually take long to read."

Dear Miriam, If the Bishop's Black Jewel TELLS A SINGLE STORY then it can be put up here. Ease of reading does not affect the size, unless the print is large or eeked out with photos, etc.

message 21: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Well, books for younger readers do tend to have larger print. And if I remember correctly Crank is written in very short lines of blank verse, so a lot of each page is empty.

message 22: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Sympathize. But if the voters can get 500 righteous pages of text, and a single story, they can post it. Quality, age, gender--not a factor. Vampires, not an issue. If voter thinks worth the effort, they can cast ONE vote. THAT SAID, It's time for SOME SKILLED LIBRARIAN TO REMOVE 'NEVER LET ME GO'---Again. (Suggestion, Hang on to him/her, but take book off the list !!!!!!!!!--Listmaker ("I am the Law ") Thom D.

message 23: by Jan C (new)

Jan C I find this list disappointing. There are too many books here that are less than 500 pages. Why set a rule if you are not going to abide by it?

And although Hitchhiker does continue a story I don't think you can call it one book - why is it STILL published in multiple volumes then? If it is listed as the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide - which I believe does combine all of the volumes, then fine.

message 24: by Thom (last edited Oct 12, 2011 07:38AM) (new)

Thom Dunn Dear Jan, You mixed your pronouns, I (italicize "I" for emphasis) started this list, but because I am NOT a skilled librarian, cannot remove the bogus entries. All I know to do is keep on keeping on, keeping the faith, appealling to people, and doing one's best....Notice, the cream rises to the top, in my opinion, while the insufficient trail after. SUGGESTION: Start by yourself listing Ultimate Hitchhiker, then appeal to other voters as you have done here. I will add it now as well.

message 25: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Nov 01, 2009 09:00AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I'll go through and weed the short ones out. Pride and Prejudice, I'm lookin' at you. Great book you are, but long you are not!

Have hit problem. The Canterbury Tales would, I think, qualify. "Chaucer's Canterbury Tales" which is on here is a 49-page children's redaction.

Better would be any volume of Chaucer and just have it understood that with the clunky apparatus we are given, that's the best we can do. The greater point is that the C. Tales , a fragment only, were intended to answer each other in theme, as Bradshaw showed conclusively way back when. I'll take Chaucer's unfinished fragment over Boccaccio's--essentially--plot summaries any day.

Just discovered that the Coghill translation is here, and qualifies. Somewhere in my piles and piles of books I have a one-volume C. Tales in Middle English. Thank you for your valiant effort. This list is much more sterling than many. Though I will be howled down by most tome-readers, I am going to state (and probably regret later that I did) that the Twilight quartet clearly qualifies with its single 4-vol uninterrupted narrative--However, some brave soul not me will have to list it.....I just can't right now...Just cannot. ) Thanks again, Thom D.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I added a Canterbury Tales that qualifies, and removed the 49-pager.

Antoine Some books which are not over the 500 pp mark, particularly long poetic books (Homer, Vergil, Chaucer) should be able to qualify for this list because of the effort that has to go into reading them. Other works, no matter how long they are, simply are not a lot of work to read (Harry Potter for example). I would allow Crime and Punishment on this principle, but I am not the lists creator, and 500 pp seems like a nice objective cutoff.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads There are editions of The Canterbury Tales that are over 500 pages, anyway. Troilus and Cresida isn't nearly that long (or I would have voted for it!).

P.S.: Deleted Fathers and Sons, as it's not nearly long enough.

Thank you, Susanna, We clearly have to keep tending to this list if it is to be meaningful--again, notice that page 1, the first 100 listed present no problems and require no hair-splitting. While EVERYONE will have a top-100 list different from that presented here, that's show biz, chacun a son gout. Note also that the top 10 are by now carved in stone(or the cybernetic equivalent). The People have spoken, God Bless Captain Vere ! and all that good stuff. ThomOut--Shantih

Emily O Time Traveller's Wife? I read that in one day. It's SHORT.

The same goes for many of the books on here.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Time Traveller's Wife is, believe it or not, over 500 pages.

message 34: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I think if you can read something in one week, it should not be on this list. It should be on this list if reading it felt like climbing a mountain - not a hill. If there were days where you felt like you might never finish. Days where you had to stop at a way-station and pause, for hours and hours, to replenish your energy. Where, after four months of reading, you saw a tiny glimmer of light that might conceivably be the end of the tunnel.

But perhaps, on your way back down the mountain, you got caught in a blizzard and died - and your body won't be found until spring.

Thom Dunn I HAVE that book...think it's called The Myth of Sisyphus......or maybe The Man In the Ice.....hmmm

See? Just because a book has a lot of pages doesn't make it long. I agree with Lobstergirl. It isn't about the number of pages; it's about the amount of effort required to read those pages...

On these criteria, I'd have to nominate Sophie's World - it's been YEARS since it took me so long (five, six months?!) to plod through any book of any length - but imho it does NOT qualify as "worth the effort."

Exactly. There's no end of the making of Big Books, and this list exists to sort to the top those which many GR readers feel are WORTH THE EFFORT.

Dear Karin, Not everyone who posts books on this list can read, or bothers to, perhaps. That said, I can only recommend that each contributor click on the H. Potter Boxed Set, given that we clearly have a single narrative in H. P., with J.K. Rowling writing the ending first, her characters growing, maturing, etc.

That's true. I put down the boxed series in my 'read' list, even tho listing them seperately would give me a higher book count.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Removed Prisoner of Azkaban.

Need any more removed, just mention it.

Thank you, Suzanna. I believe that the great number of folks voting on this list have made for a righteous top half, even though the inclusion the The Host gives many fits. Too bad about that, but quality--whatever that is--is not a determinant. That said, I'll probably be calling on you in the future if someone puts up a 499 page book titled "Pimp My Ride With Sea Monsters" or tries to argue that "Lust Farm" and "Tower of the Screaming Virgins" are really a single story. Hang tough. L, Thom

Thom Dunn Rebecca wrote: "I had seen one about the Prophet Muhammeds wife and now I cannot find it."

There are news reports from early August saying that Random House has scrapped plans it had to publish "a book about Aisha, wife of the Prophet Mohammed"...Could that be the one you were thinking of ?

message 49: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Can we get rid of House of Mirth? It's only 352 pp.

message 50: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl The edition of House of the Seven Gables is only on here because it's a Norton Critical edition, which usually has 100-200 extra pages of commentary. I think it should be axed.
