Melissa When you read a book as a child it becomes part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your life does.

Very true! A book or poem at a young age can affect a person's entire life.

message 3: by Jim (new)

Jim the books, to win a Newbery, must be written by a U.S. citizen or someone living in the US. (Gaiman now lives here, hence his winning the medal.) the medal was first given in early 1920s.

message 7: by Josiah (new)

Josiah I just wanted to bring it to someone's attention that The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare and When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead have both found their way onto this list, even though they both were winners of the Newbery Medal and aren't Newbery Honor books.

Thanks.

Cindy The Newbery folks really like historical fiction, don't they? And I notice that what they pick isn't what kids would pick.

Melissa (ladybug) Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry are both Newbery Winners, not Honor Books. Thank you
