Penny Hello and welcome! I'm a huge list fan and I love to look at the patterns of how we all read over the years. I thought of this idea after being part of Buggy, Hayes and Marlene's lists, which I love and will also link on here for those that don't know about them.
I think it's a great idea to look at a decade of women and will be an indicator of who we are as those women for future generations to look back on. (No pressure hehe).

message 2: by Penny (new)

Penny Here is a link to Buggy's 'What we've read so far in 2012'
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/15...

If you haven't come across this list yet, then it is a must for Listers!

message 3: by Penny (new)

Penny Here is a link to Hayes' '2012 What the Over 35s Have Read so Far'
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/15...

A great list for readers over the age of 35.

Penny Here's one final link, to Marlene's '2012 The Over 35s favourite books of 2012'
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/16...

A place to register your favourite books if you're over 35.

message 5: by Buggy (new)

Buggy Hi Penny, sadly I missed the 70's cutoff by 1 year. No problem with the link though, thanks for the traffic.

message 6: by Penny (new)

Penny As I've said to the others - how about one of you start one for your decade as well? Then we can compare the cross-sections of readers?!

message 7: by Penny (new)

Penny Ooooh, look at that - 'The Hunger Games' has entered the list...will it get to number 1 in this list too?

message 8: by Penny (new)

Penny Not born in the 1970s? Perhaps you could start your own decade. One for women born in the 1990s has been started - you can vote here:

I hope this link works. If it doesn't, just do a search and I'm sure you will find it.

Cheers,
Penny :)

Tineke And here's the list for women born in the '80's. Please add books.
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/20...

message 10: by Penny (new)

Penny I promise to read the top 3 books on this list after the poll ends on the 31st of December. Please make sure it's not the '50 shades' books people [gratuitous sex scenes make me cringe]!!!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I wish I could help you, Penny, but alas, I was not born in the 70s!

message 12: by Penny (new)

Penny Damn!

message 13: by Penny (new)

Penny And as of today - The Hunger Games trilogy is back on top (am I allowed to say 'woohoo!'???), I never thought I'd be so happy for it to be out on top again...

message 15: by Penny (last edited Oct 31, 2012 10:31PM) (new)

Penny Hey there fellow 70s chicks!

Let's try and get this list of our 2012 books over 1000. If you're with me on this project, and you haven't done so already, could you please invite any females born in the 1970s on your friends list to vote in our list? If I do my math correctly, they should be between the ages of 32 and 42 right now (give or take the date they were born).
Of course you don't have to do this, but wouldn't it be fantabulous if we could get over 1000 books read between us by the end of the year, nay, the end of November?

Looking forward to seeing how we go,

Penny :)

message 16: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Ojanen I made my list in error - I was not paying attention - I'm in my 70s, not born in the 70s - oh well, no harm done and it's always good to see what people are reading - have a great read, I know I will.

message 17: by Penny (new)

Penny Patricia wrote: "I made my list in error - I was not paying attention - I'm in my 70s, not born in the 70s - oh well, no harm done and it's always good to see what people are reading - have a great read, I know I w..."

That's ok Patricia - and anyone else that has mistaken the rules of this list (must be a woman born in the 1970s and vote only for the books you've read THIS year (2012)) - It's quite easy for you to remove your votes by clicking the 'x' icon next to each of your entries on the right.

THEN if you want to put your books on a list - may I suggest Buggy's list 'What we've read so far in 2012' or Hayes' list '2012 What the over 35s have read so far'? - if you scroll through these messages you will find both of their links listed. They're great lists and not as specific as this one.

Cheers and happy reading,
Penny :)

message 18: by Penny (new)

Penny I'm hoping someone else can help here. I want to make this list as accurate as possible, and as you see above, a mistake has been made. I've had no response from Patricia to my comment nor email and I need to remove the votes. I can't do it and I'm not a librarian - is this something that a librarian can do? Or are we really at the mercy of the person removing the votes themselves? What if they never come back online?

Hoping someone can help,

Penny [I know I'll come across as pedantic to some, but the ten year cross-section is important to me...]

message 19: by Amber (new)

Amber Penny wrote: "I'm hoping someone else can help here. I want to make this list as accurate as possible, and as you see above, a mistake has been made. I've had no response from Patricia to my comment nor email an..."

Penny, I just became a librarian to manage my own list. With that status, I am able to remove a book, but not able to remove any votes. I think you are stuck here unless Patricia removes the votes herself. If she is the only voter of some of the books, then I could remove those for you.

message 20: by Amber (new)

Amber Penny, I hope you make this list again for next year. I have enjoyed seeing what us 70's girls all read. :)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I know of no way for a librarian to remove specific votes for a book, just all of the votes for a book. Patricia would have to remove her own votes, is the only way I know.

You could look at Patricia's list and mentally remove a vote for all of the ones she voted for?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Better hope for a late push by something (presumably the Hunger Games books or The Help), or you're going to be stuck with Fifty Shades of Gray, Penny!

message 23: by Penny (new)

Penny OMG I know! Everytime I click on this list lately I quake at what I might have to do in the name of literary challenges...

message 24: by Penny (last edited Dec 15, 2012 11:12PM) (new)

Penny Amber wrote: (paraphrasing): Books can be removed but not votes.

I don't know how this post slipped by me - I will have a look and let you know.
And thanks about the list - I'm definitely going to set one up for next year. It will be a full year in 2013, so we should get more than this years votes (fingers crossed!).

message 25: by Penny (new)

Penny To Susanna and Amber:

Damn. I just looked up her votes and others have voted for them too. So I guess I'm relying on Patricia's good graces to remove her votes [if she's even still hooked in to Goodreads?]. She hasn't replied to any of my requests. I will do a mental tally at the end of voting just in case any of them end in the top five.

Thanks for your help and suggestion ladies :)

message 26: by Penny (new)

Penny I was just thinking [eeek - run for cover!]. I'm part of group that read set books embarking on the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice every year. Being in New Zealand myself, we're just about at Summer Solstice (Winter for you folks in the Northern Hemisphere) and so the group has decided on reading E.M. Forster's 'A Room With a View'.
What a coup if more of us could read this classic and finish it in the New Year perhaps...imagine a list that might bump 'The Hunger Games' out of first position in favour of a classic for at least a while?

I leave it for you all to mull over and consider. No list commitment is necessary, but I've put it out there...

Penny :)

message 27: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Dec 16, 2012 10:16AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I would vote for The Help for you if I could, but I wasn't born in the 70s!

message 28: by Penny (new)

Penny Sorry about that too...it's a great decade to be born in!!!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Eh, '66 was a good year, too. ;>

message 30: by Caz (new)

Caz Susanna wrote: "Eh, '66 was a good year, too. ;>"

So was '63 ;) There isn' t a list for us 60s chicks!

message 31: by Penny (new)

Penny Well you know what to do ladies...start a 60s one for 2013...

message 32: by Penny (new)

Penny Well, we've done it! We collectively managed to get over 1000 different books read before the end of the year (with a few days to spare, phew!). Well done everyone :)

message 33: by Penny (new)

Penny Hi Everyone,
This is a reminder to catch up and get your books read for 2012 voted in this week. And if you're one of the lucky ones (or fast readers) that read more than 100 this year, to sort your list into your favourite 100 read this year.
I'll be doing a tally on the 3rd of January and then I won't be looking at the page again. I will however put a link in to the 2013 list - so don't panic (if you are the panicky type)!

message 34: by Penny (last edited Jan 02, 2013 01:27AM) (new)

Penny I'm in New Zealand, and it is 1pmish on the 31st, so before I get into the merriment of the evening, I've put up the 2013 list. Gosh darn, it says I listed it on Dec 30th (because I'm a teensy bit ahead of the rest of the world).
But all that aside - new list for 2013 is up people! See above for the link...and...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

message 35: by Penny (new)

Penny We're all wrapped-up on this one people - onward to 2013! :)
