message 51: by [deleted user] (new)

I see wat u are saying Laura, but twilight can be enjoyed by all audiances. i was in 5th grade when i read it!

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Laura wrote: "Twilight as a must read for MIDDLE SCHOOLERS?? That's 11 to 14 year olds....are we sure about that?"

Twilight... YES. Breaking Dawn is where it gets fuzzier ('specially since she doesn't get out of bed for 20-odd pages....)

Okay now that makes sense. middle schoolers can read twilight-eclipse(even though i didnt)

message 48: by Allison (new)

Allison Laura wrote: "Twilight as a must read for MIDDLE SCHOOLERS?? That's 11 to 14 year olds....are we sure about that?"

I've read the whole seriese and im im 8th grade, the only book i regret reading was Breaking dawn, because it has non graphic sexual content, not something i need to read

message 47: by Hunter (new)

Hunter Didriksen I think this is a good book list because i will be in middle school next year. And i should probably read some of these then.

message 46: by Allison (new)

Allison yeah read Enders game and the Hobbit there REALLy good!
oh and also read Where the read furn grows and Harry potter 9if u haven't read them already

message 45: by Hunter (new)

Hunter Didriksen i have read the first book of harry potter but i didnt read the rest because i didnt like the first one.

message 44: by Allison (new)

Allison oh dude read all of them, i admit the first and second are not the best but they get TUNS better

message 43: by Liz (new)

Liz a reluctant rising 8th grader picked it up and now READS voraciously--as a librarian I say read what you like

message 42: by Allison (new)

Allison and as an 8th grader who LOVES to read, I say, try new books or pick one off the shelf at random. hehe

message 41: by Liz (last edited Jul 10, 2009 04:29AM) (new)

Liz glad you love to read--
I always told my students (as a Media Specialist) if something is offensive to you --turn the book back in and try something else. It's called Intellectual Freedom. And I was and still am full of suggestions--and I warn of things that might be "too old" for reader. But it;s their choice.

message 40: by Allison (new)

Allison yeah, I've run into that a lot especially when i pull a book off the shelf at random, I read the back and find out about the author before i check it out, (don't encourage V.C. Andrew's books, there not in the middle school "range"

message 39: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy i thought twilight was aimed for 6-10 year olds. but if you are 10, it wil just waste your time, go outside and play.

message 38: by Melissa (new)

Melissa garcia So far I've read 3/4 of the list! starting with Twilight Saga, to Harry Potter, To stargirl, to What My Mother Doesn't Know which is beyond great! I have read most of the books and loved them <3 and I'm still planning on read the 1/4 I haven't read :]

message 37: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy interesting melissa. thank you for sharing.

not

message 36: by Allison (new)

Allison Chrissy honey, Twilight was written for Teens sorry to brake it to u....

message 35: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy i know it was written and aimed for them, but 6 year olds are above that level.

message 34: by Allison (new)

Allison well yeah, uh there was some "adult" content tho in most of the books. I haven't met a 6 year old yet that's that mature to deal w/ all the kissing and mushy lovey-dovey crap.
But the book WAS written very badly. so...

message 33: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Laura wrote: "Twilight as a must read for MIDDLE SCHOOLERS?? That's 11 to 14 year olds....are we sure about that?"

I think Twilight is perfectly fine for middle schoolers, and even New Moon. Now, I would wait a little longer than middle school to read Eclipse or especially Breaking Dawn, but TWILIGHT? Twilight has a few kisses, nothing else.

message 32: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Chrissy wrote: "i thought twilight was aimed for 6-10 year olds. but if you are 10, it wil just waste your time, go outside and play."

Umm... 6-10 year olds? 6 year olds are still just learning to write in cursive... I don't think that any six year old is ready for that. Even ten year olds, that's just too much. aren't you ten in FOURTH grade? that's not even out of elementary school, thats when they are still guided around by parents and teachers all day. sorry Chrissy, but where did you get the idea that Twilight is for 6-10 year olds when mothers all over th country are not letting their teens read it because of it's "mature content"?

message 31: by Heather (new)

Heather I agree - Twilight is a joke. Encourage kids to read, yes. Twilight on a list of must reads? I'm sorry but when I was in middle school our reading list was full of classics, not movie adaptations.

message 30: by Antonia (new)

Antonia About Twilight? Uhmm... no. I would like to read something other than a girl in love with a vampire. The first book is good enough, but the rest of the series goes on and on about how awesome is to be with a vampire. Read them all, so I talk as a former Twilighter. Edward Cullen doesn't really exist and thank God for that!

message 29: by Tristian (new)

Tristian I'm all for intellectual freedom for readers but as far as the Twilight series goes I'm not sure I would let my middle-schooler read those. There's not enough in the context advocating a woman's independence when in a tough situation. Not to mention some of the graphic content.

message 28: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Twilight is a book that kids in middle school that don't like to read should read. It's that shallow.

message 27: by ɐzzıɹʞ ɐzzıɹʞ (last edited Jul 15, 2010 04:28AM) (new)

ɐzzıɹʞ ɐzzıɹʞ I would never recommend twilight to my younger sister...
I would like her to read Holes, though. And also HP, PJO series, Bridge to Terabithia and many more. I want her to learn and discover a whole new world of fantasies and excitement, just like me....I want her to be a reader...(*smile*)

message 26: by Jeanelle (new)

Jeanelle I'd read Twilight but with all these bad comments... I'm not going to read it. I'm not really into those kind of books.

message 25: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Black There are some other good books on this list check it out if you want to find some more good books to read:

message 24: by Jessie (last edited Mar 10, 2012 03:18PM) (new)

Jessie Chrissy wrote: "i thought twilight was aimed for 6-10 year olds. but if you are 10, it wil just waste your time, go outside and play."

Somehow I find this comment the most amusing thing I've read all day... Society is getting more and more unfazed by things every day. I guess the next time I see a toddler in walmart beating/chewing the snot out of it's mother, I'll just wave it off as "Oh, the lucky duck was exposed to Twilight. It's just practicing it's hunting, whining, and fist fighting skills that it learned after it read a 150,000 word book."

BTW folks, I think Chrissy was being as sarcastic as I was being.

When I was in middle school, we read Hardy Boys and Island of the Blue Dolphins. We left the fuzzy/meaningless relationship junk for all of those obnoxious junior high students.

message 23: by Meg (new)

Meg man i read most of those books already i was hoping to see books i havent read

message 22: by Charlie (new)

Charlie Lizzie wrote: "I see wat u mean about that but twilight is very interesting and everyone should be encouraged to read!"

are you sure about that? I don't agree. its about a girl who basically lives for some guy. Great message for kids, right?

message 21: by Francesca (last edited Sep 10, 2012 11:24AM) (new)

Francesca Escamilla I think everyone here is too focused on Twilight anyway. You either like or you don't. If you like it great, read it and re-read it to your hearts content. If you don't like it then great, don't read it and move on.

If we really want to nit pick about one book on a list of 100, then some people have way too much free time on their hands... time that could be better spent reading.

Just because someone likes something doesn't mean we have to attack those who dont agree with us. That seems a little narrow-minded.

Books are all about exploring and they come in a wide range. We shouldn't encourage our kids to read a specific book about this or that, but rather we should encourage our kids to read period.

message 20: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn I just started middle school so this list is boss

*LAUGHING MANIACALIY* 6-10 hahahahahaha you really thought that hahahaha siriously XD sure if you would like your six your old to learn about sexual content XD you are right Jessie :) I mean this girl almost commits suicide cause she can't live with a guy. She has a baby when she's like, 18. Nice message for kids :)

Laura wrote: "Twilight as a must read for MIDDLE SCHOOLERS?? That's 11 to 14 year olds....are we sure about that?"

I read it when I was 11. And I could be 11 now for all you know.

*FLYING RAINBOW KITTEH* :) Jeanelle wrote: "I'd read Twilight but with all these bad comments... I'm not going to read it. I'm not really into those kind of books."

Oh please read it. People are overeacting a bit. Just middle schoolers, that's not really appropriate

message 14: by Lilo (new)

Lilo Must-reads, to me, are stories one must read for enlightening, expansion of the mind, and/or educational purposes. In this sense, "Switch", by Karen Price, is not exactly a must-read, but it surely is an enchanting story and fun to read. -- I haven't finished reading it yet as I presently must read books about publishing, digital marketing, and Third Reich history, which are less fun to read. As soon as I feel I should reward myself for duty-reading with a fun-read, I'll surely pick up "Switch" again, even though I am almost 60 years beyond middle school age. (By the way, I like it far better than any of the Harry Potter books, 4 of which I had picked up at a 2nd hand store, had started reading and had soon put aside.)

message 13: by Amelia (new)

Amelia Mccahill As an 8th grader, I love to read and I've read a lot of books on this list, but I also want to say that "middle school range" can vary from person to person. I read some of these when I was much younger, and I have not yet gotten to many others. So really middle school reading level can change depending on the person.

message 12: by Savannah (new)

Savannah 47 Ronin and Memoirs of a Geisha are NOT for ANY middle schoolers. Gah. What idiots posted those?

really!

message 10: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Re: Books by Robert Stanek:

Don't believe the hype. This book has not been recommended as claimed in the blurb. It is not a best seller. It has not won awards. It is amateur garbage that has been slickly marketed. It also is not appropriate for children.

In addition the narrator on the version sold through Audible is horrendous.

Do your due diligence before purchasing this one.

http://conjugalfelicity.com/robert-st...

My advice: Don't waste any money or any time on this one. There is no one who would honestly and truthfully believe this trash is a great story.

There are however critiques of it on the web that are pretty entertaining. Find one of those instead if you really want to know what this book is all about.

I recommend this one: http://conjugalfelicity.com/keeper-ma...

message 9: by Kaylin (new)

Kaylin A good middle school book is Famous Last Words. You guess out there should really read it.

message 8: by Maryum (new)

Maryum ❤ Lizzie wrote: "I see wat u mean about that but twilight is very interesting and everyone should be encouraged to read!"

I read the Twilight saga in Grade 8 and I loved it. I mean, Yeah it wasn't such a middle school book and now in high school, I think it is more of a high school book. idk.

Frankie Rufolo Lizzie wrote: "I see wat u mean about that but twilight is very interesting and everyone should be encouraged to read!" No... Just... No

message 6: by Abeerah (new)

Abeerah If this is for middle schoolers, I wouldn't exactly reccomend "Speak" as that is a mature topic. Though if your a mature reader than I suppose you could but it is a sad and powerful story.
