Will I like 3 of those books, what does that mean?

message 2: by Brian (new)

Brian It means you should stand up for the books you believe in!: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/15...

message 3: by Cecile "Sasha" (new)

Cecile "Sasha" What does it mean if you "vote" for a book? That you liked it, or that if somebody read it you won't get along?

message 4: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Isn't it kind of shallow to dislike someone just because their taste in books differs from yours? o.O

message 5: by rivka (new)

rivka Brittany wrote: "Isn't it kind of shallow to dislike someone just because their taste in books differs from yours? o.O"

So if you found out that someone loved Mein Kampf, you'd be cool with that?

message 6: by Chinmayi (new)

Chinmayi Why is Mein Kampf not the first entry here then??

message 7: by rivka (new)

rivka I was giving an example. This list seems to be a bit more light-hearted than that. But if you agree that someone who adores Mein Kampf might be ok to be wary of, that any objection to this list is of degree, not kind.

message 8: by Zazoo (new)

Zazoo Book Pimp I think this was a fun list to do, thanks

message 9: by Zazoo (new)

Zazoo Book Pimp wtf

message 10: by Brian (last edited Jan 13, 2012 10:49PM) (new)

Brian let's just carry on with the conversation....i found it satisfying to scroll through this list, pick out the ones i love and add to the Dealbreaker Dealbreakers list. :)

and yeah, i'd like to think this is a lighthearted list for most of us. i only added one, but it was one of the worst books i've ever read. (there was much anticipation, but i don't think anyone who did read it thought it was anything wonderful...it's all in the marketing.)

message 11: by Zazoo (new)

Zazoo Book Pimp I agree. I hate to see someone wigging out or getting themselves upset over something as meaningless as these lists.....no offence to your list, its quite a fine list at that LOL

What was the book??

message 14: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Why is Bridges of Madison County not on this list?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You could add it.

message 16: by Zazoo (new)

Zazoo Book Pimp Alright, maybe I got the meaning behind this list all wrong...isnt it the worst books you can think of that would be deal breakers....for instance the Paris book or the Snookie book? If you like those books then its a deal breaker?

message 17: by Joshua (new)

Joshua This is quite possibly one of the worst lists I have ever seen. I agreed up until about 40, and then the list kinda started to contradict it's self. Mainly by adding people from the republican party's book's saying that you wouldn't like them, but then turning around and saying that you don't like Charles Darwin's book, somthing they speak out about (not only poorly, but are typically quite wrong about).

message 18: by Zazoo (new)

Zazoo Book Pimp I think for me that its about what character type you may not jive with. For instance if you prefer people who party (party animals, wild childs) then you might give Snookie or Paris book a chance.
If your the intellectual, studious type, perhaps even a lil nerdy then you could prefer Darwin, or historical figures like Karl Marxx .
I guess that would be "judging a book by its cover" ooops

message 19: by Kara (new)

Kara rivka wrote: "Brittany wrote: "Isn't it kind of shallow to dislike someone just because their taste in books differs from yours? o.O"

I don't see how you can judge someone based on the fact that they might have enjoyed reading a book by a terrible person and leader. If people are very interested in history or psychology they may really enjoy reading a book that would provide lots of information on a historical figure and psyche behind their actions. It does not mean that the person reading/learning about/enjoying the book is a bad person or has a bad personality.
However, I don't think that this book should be in a person's top 5 must reads or part of their introduction hehe.
I find this list very interesting and kind of funny. Mostly funny because I have read (or want to read) a lot of books from this list.

message 20: by Xdyj (last edited Jan 16, 2012 07:05AM) (new)

Xdyj I have read 16 books in the top 100 so far and liked about half of them e.g. Hitchhiker's Guide, the books by Austin, Darwin, Karl Marx, Golding, and Twilight is not that bad either imo:) I think there are two kinds of "like". People can like a book b/c they agree with the author, or just like it for fun and for understanding the other side. If it is the first case then maybe it says sth about what a person believes.

message 21: by Brian (new)

message 22: by Tessa (new)

Tessa Haha! So fun!

message 23: by Will (new)

Will Caskey Great Expectations? What did that book do to anyone besides exist on their summer reading lists?

message 24: by Brian (new)

Brian Will wrote: "Great Expectations? What did that book do to anyone besides exist on their summer reading lists?"

Entertained, enlightened and uplifted, I believe. ;)

message 25: by Joe (new)

Joe At first I read this as if you like this book, we get along. I was so horrified! Horrified!

I am so glad I misread. Thank you goodreads, for restoring my faith in you.

message 26: by Kate (new)

Kate Anderson Why on earth is Lolita on here? I can understand many of the others, even though I have to confess I've liked some of them. But Lolita is undeniably one of the best pieces of literature ever written in the English language, period, and I can't believe it's on a list with Sparks and Snookie.

message 27: by Will (new)

Will Caskey Kate wrote: "Why on earth is Lolita on here? I can understand many of the others, even though I have to confess I've liked some of them. But Lolita is undeniably one of the best pieces of literature ever writte..."

Yeah maybe if one likes the point of view with a certain character. Or any of them.

message 28: by Kate (new)

Kate Anderson I don't think you have to like the point of view or sympathize to appreciate the prose.

message 29: by Quinn (new)

Quinn Some of these happen to be on my list of favorite books. Feel free to not like me. I rock either way.

message 30: by Laurel (new)

Laurel People are taking this WAY too seriously....

message 31: by Laura (new)

Laura Harper This list confuses me to be honest. I agree with most of them being utter dross (a LOT of them in actual fact), but then halfway through it starts contradicting itself... and then Hitchhikers appears!!! WTF?!

message 32: by rivka (new)

rivka Of course the list "contradicts" itself. It's not one person's list; it has votes from almost 500 different people!

message 33: by Laura (new)

Laura Harper Ah right well that explains a lot :) Just a moment of confusion from a newbie there. Hence my statement 'this list confuses me'.

message 34: by rivka (new)

rivka Sorry, wasn't just responding to you. Someone else said something similar earlier.

Listopia lists are group projects. Remember how when you had to do those in school you always had a couple people who couldn't agree, but somehow the project got done anyway? This is like that, but on a larger scale. ;)

message 35: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Sarah wrote: "Some of these happen to be on my list of favorite books. Feel free to not like me. I rock either way."

This.

message 36: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa For some reason I feel kind of upset seeing classics thrown in among books written by Justin Bieber and Snooki.

message 37: by Latoya (last edited Jan 20, 2012 01:32PM) (new)

Latoya This was all fun and laughs until I saw Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" on the list...smile instantly faded. It's one of my faves, hands down, and I still think I'm pretty awesome! The top ten are still pretty hilarious, though :D

message 38: by Katie (new)

Katie Mac I would agree with a lot of these...but some of these books are rather harsh. I mean, Memoirs of a Geisha? Great Expectations? THE GIVER! If you don't like these books, you probably don't get along with a lot of people.

message 39: by Parajunkee (new)

Parajunkee Just be glad people can read. There were quite a few of books on this list that I've read and enjoyed...thanks for judging me. This is ridiculous that it was placed as a featured list.

Sarah (Inklings Read) Parajunkee.com wrote: "Just be glad people can read. There were quite a few of books on this list that I've read and enjoyed...thanks for judging me. This is ridiculous that it was placed as a featured list."

Agreed. Couldn't have said it better!

message 41: by Brett (new)

Brett Yance rivka wrote: "Brittany wrote: "Isn't it kind of shallow to dislike someone just because their taste in books differs from yours? o.O"

So if you found out that someone loved Mein Kampf, you'd be cool with that?"

Clearly, Brittany wasn't talking about Mein Kampf alone. However, there is great value in Mein Kampf. Especially to, say, psychologists? It's an autobiography and an explanation of Hitler's thoughts. Loving the book does not mean you love what it stands for. It's a doorway to the mind of one of the most monstrous men. Well worth a read.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Worth a read? Yes; I've read it. Didn't exactly like it, however. (I found it impossible to rate, actually.)

Tina French Though I agree with many of these books based on the authors, I am curious if the person who originally created this list read the books he/she listed?

Kati I think this list would offend just about anybody - watch out for those Mormons! Fun list.

Paputsza I assume a lot of Justin Beiber fans could be about five by now, and I can't have anything against them for liking his book.

Teresa The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same books. I actually like some of these but I see how they might not appeal to everyone.

I would vote for any books in this kind of genre (if there are any):
how to hunt sperm whales for dummies.
365 ways to hurt cats.
why animals are stupid and how they should die.
pollute-destroy-kill: the life and times of deforestation and hunting company owners.
to kill a mocking bird: 10,000 ways to catch, trap, kill, cook and eat endangered wildlife.

you know, stuff like that :)

Alec Rieder really people? what's with all of the hate for Conservative writers, I mean I don't like Ann Couleter, but Glenn Beck and Bill O Reilly actually are good, and make good points. And the Christmas Sweater made me CRY people, and if you actually took the time to read it, you might see why it's good. Stop the bias towards authors people, honestly.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Some of us don't like the political pundits generally.
