Good Minds Suggest—Seth Godin's Favorite Business Books

January, 2013
Seth Godin Entrepreneur and lecturer Seth Godin deals in ideas. Developing ideas, marketing ideas, and getting ideas in front of as many eyeballs as possible. The author of a whopping 18 books covering business trends and leadership strategies, Godin also founded the user interest-driven Web site Squidoo.com and writes an enormously popular marketing blog. In his multiple best-sellers, including Linchpin, Tribes, and Poke the Box, Godin introduces industry buzzwords such as "purple cows" and "permission marketing." Always one to try something new, the marketer launched his latest book, The Icarus Deception: How High Will You Fly?, via the crowd-funding Web site Kickstarter. Godin describes his latest as a manifesto about "our chance (each of us!) to start doing work that matters while we still have the opportunity." He suggests five business books by big brains that transcend the genre.

The Republic of Tea by Mel Ziegler & Patricia Ziegler
"A true story, told in the form of faxes, about building an enterprise. Thrilling, infuriating, and ultimately rewarding, this is one of the best books about business ever written."

Finite and Infinite Games by James P. Carse
"[This] isn't a business book at all, except that it's so profound, it affects the way we do everything at work. Carse argues that we either play to win or we play to support the game."

The Tom Peters Seminar by Tom Peters
"Short, illustrated, fun, breezy, and powerful. Overlooked, it's his most accessible work, which says a lot."

See You at the Top by Zig Ziglar
"This is Zig's first book, the work of a passionate amateur. It's filled with stories that never fail to resonate."

Do the Work by Steven Pressfield (Goodreads Author)
"Pressfield, a successful screenwriter and novelist, presents his thinking on the Resistance and the war of art in this slim, fast read that will change your life forever."
