The Danish Reading Circle was founded in 2001 by Danish speakers, Anne Ipsen and Gitte Mohr, to provide an opportunity for Danish speaking members of the Danish American Center in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area of Minnesota to read and discuss Danish literature in the Danish language. The group then expanded to include English speakers, who read English translations of the original danish literature. In this way, both Danish speakers and English speakers can read and discuss the same literature.

The focus of the group is on reading and discussing Danish fiction books by Danish authors. The group also reads books by Danish speaking authors of the Faroe Islands and books by Scandinavian authors from Norway, Iceland and Sweden. Books are selected by the members from lists of the best books in Danish and Scandinavian literature (from a variety of time periods) and from those recommended personally by members of the group.

The Danish Reading Circle meets eight times a year at the Danish American Center building at 3030 West River Parkway in Minneapolis, Minnesota from 3:00 - 5:00PM on the second Sunday in September, October, November, January, February, March, and April. In May, we will meet on the third Sunday. There are no meetings in December, June, July and August.

The books being read and discussed have both a Danish and English version. The book discussions are in English. The discussions are open and free flowing. If we have a guest discussion leader, they may provide us with guided questions. Although it is recommended that the book to be discussed be completely read before each monthly discussion in order to get the maximum benefit from the discussion, participants are still encouraged to come for the discussion even if they haven't read the entire book.
