recommends it for: readers with multiple personalities

First book I've read with a split personality. When it was good, it was really good. When it was bad, it was really bad. The beginning of the book was wonderful. I was hooked from the first sentence. But then it was as if Kingslover could not let go of her characters and she kept the story going too long. I wish she would have stopped the book when the family left Africa. All in all a decent read.

An easy read about a family that moves to Africa on a religious mission by the father and how this shapes the lives of all family members. The story was easy to get into, but the characters seemed a little one dimensional.

Read in March, 2007

Barbara Kingslover matures as a writer in this novel. I love her views on colonialism and sisterhood. While I first read this book a few years ago, rereading it for book club had been a pleasure.
