Read in January, 1996
That's right, that's right, I read it. I read the behemouth, the "best novel of all time," the 1000+ page "based on the Odyssey like how O Brother Where Art Thou is based on the Odyssey," the book that has its own day of celebration (JUNE 16 for you keeping score at home), the one, the only, James Joyce's Ulysses.
I liked it, but that was with an entire semester and not one but two supporting books to understand what was going on. I believe that the Irish get it ...more

"Scrotum-tightening sea" ??? Yes!
On the one hand I like how Joyce gets super aggro with the word construction and general linguistic weirdness. On the other hand, I am clearly not man enough to get through this book even with on-line cliff's notes to help me. I made it to the end of chapter three, and I'm unsure at this juncture as to whether I will ever actually pick this book up and complete it. I'm not ruling it out, but it doesn't look likely. In honor of its liter...more
