From the first page, I couldn't put this book down. The character in the book had suffered some abuse prior to her imprisonment, and it is graphic and disturbing when re-told. Overall, reading about how this girls survives was seriously fascinating!

This books includes everything I need; thrill, adventure, murder, and a love story. Book one of three. This one was my favorite by far.

Started off slow, but towards the middle it pulled in and I had to finish. Lots of fantasy, and plot twist.

I read this book on 2007 a few times, but loved it so much that I felt it was time to reread it. I'm so happy I did. I found myself waiting for certain parts to happen bc I remembered how much I love them.

The concept of a prisoner given the chance to be a poison tester instead of hanging intrigued me.

The characters were well developed and their interactions were perfect. Each character pushed the story further.

Janco and Ari were great. And Valek...swoon.

I wish I knew more people who have rea

Stolen from her home at a young age, Yalena was taken to Ixia where she was thrown into experiments - at first harmless tests of her magical ability. Magic is forbidden in Ixia, but in the home of General Brazell - he took in orphan children that had magical abilities. As Yalena became older, she realized that Brazell was not a fatherly figure, his tests turning into tortures until she was given up on. Brazell let his sadestic son - Reyad - have her and she killed him in self-defense.

Wonderful and original YA fantasy/adventure with a touch of romance!

I had serious doubts as I read the first chapter. The first chapter could use a rewrite to be more in-line with the style of the rest of the book. It seemed as though this first chapter alone had gone through some kind of writing workshop that unnecessarily required writers to add pizzazz to the descriptions by over-describing them and using active verbs everywhere. This doesn't work if you do it in every sentence and with every

Took this down to 4 stars just because there were SO many accents in this book. People from the same place talked in five different ways and I have no idea why.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the mixture of old/fantasy. I also always love books where the main character is a strong female in training of some sort (Dragonsong, Crystal Singer, etc.) I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

WOW!! Talk about a strong heroine who's been through hell and in the end gets the respect she deserves, along with some sort of closer and the hot boy. Seriously, this is a fantastic book and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I'll be honest, I was a little nervous reading an "adult" book, but I'm a little shocked that it's not a YA book. It's an amazing fantasy, with beautiful world building, unforgettable characters, romance, action, snark and everything else that makes this a 5 st ...more

I liked this book better than Storm Glass, the first book of her other series. I was captivated from the beginning by the action and the strong heroine, Yelena.

While it didn't completely pull me in until near the end - when I couldn't put it down until I finished it - I enjoyed this book. It is definitely an adult book - not a YA book. I will continue the series to see what happens. I'd give it about 3.5 stars.
