A fine historical novel of a proposed trilogy. I hope so. The book introduces five families each of different backgrounds but all affected by the events of early 20th Century events. Follett uses his characters to exposed the attitudes of the countries entangled in World War I. He, then, takes the reader into the actual battles of the war and the political battles in the homelands. This is a very long book and it's hard to get in to at first because there are so many characters and several story lines. It takes place right before, during, and right after World War I. It was interesting to see how international relations affected personal relationships in different parts of the world.
