There are three main themes: The unpredictable nature of growing up, the sadness of death, and love. Essentially it's a love story, and it felt like your typical one, until about halfway through. Then I slowly realized that it had become something so much deeper than that; something so much more.

I wish that I could write Mr. Murakami a letter and personally thank him for writing this novel. Rich in emotion, his use of sexuality as a vehicle through which we can understand (or struggle to understand) the world we live in (or attempt to live in) was riveting and extremely compelling. Without giving away anything (because everyone should go buy this now and read it), this book has landed just below Kafka on the Shore as my second favorite Murakami novel.
