A lot of Chuck Palahniuk fans don't LOVE this book. But as a writer, I have to say that I really liked it. What makes it good isn't really the story as a whole - it's all the little character stories that feed into the main plot of why all these people are at the writer's retreat. Also, if you are a writer, the 'afterword' should be required reading. Palahniuk does a great job of hitting on exactly why we right. We all have different voices, etc., but we all feel that pull, that need to write.

This is an interesting frame story about a group of people who elect to join a "writer's retreat" for three months. Several people join up; and then find there's no way out. They're there for three months. It's what the game show Survivor might have been if Stephen King had created it. (Actually, that's probably not true--Stephen King would have created The Long Walk.) I was a little disappointed that the best short story was placed at the very beginning. I did like the story plot of Mrs. Clark and her daughter. Perhaps i was a little put off because it was hard to imagine that two weeks into captivity the group would harm themselves in such ways. Or I'm being overly critical because I loved all the other Chuck books so much that I had high expectations for this one, too. i love the idea of this book, of the interlinking stories...stomach-churningly disgusting in parts, with a rather unexpected ending
