The narrator of this book is Death. He tells the gripping story of Liesel, a young girl who lives in Nazi Germany before and during WWII. In the beginning, Liesel does not know how to read. However, after stealing a book from the men who dug her brother's grave, Liesel's foster father teaches her to read. She continues to steal books (even those burned by Nazi soldiers) and uses them to cope with the death, hatred and destruction brought by the Nazi's control.

I recently finished this book for the second time and again I am impressed by the talent of Markus Zusak. This book has everything I love in a book. I laughed with the characters and my heart broke with theirs, twice. It provides the unique perspective of 'Death' during World War II Germany and follows the story of one ordinary girl, whose life is anything but. A Must Read for everyone!

Death is a surprisingly empathic narrator as he visits a young foster child during WWII Nazi Germany. The reader experiences life of the working poor and those sympathic to Jews but ruled by fear. The Book Thief is an exceptionally well-written book that explores honor, suffering, and the endurance of the human spirit.

Wow.
Zusak writes an amazing story of the Holocaust with Death as narrator. Brilliant, tear-jerking, fresh and vibrant language. Love his style.
