Goodreads!!!!! The ratings and reviews have pushed me into rating this book five stars. This is one of the great novels about place. It tackles Florida in the only way anyone could, by focusing on the strange. You live inside this book. Karen Russell has crafted a unique world, a creation that speaks volumes about reality. I liked it. Maybe about a 3.5 if Goodreads allowed half stars. The horrible things I pictured happening did not happen. OTHER horrible things did though. A very unconventional family and interesting story of resilience.

This didn't quite hang together for me. I liked the writing and Russell's imagination. But for a three-hundred something page novel, it took me forever.
