The year is 1832 and Charlotte Doyle is about to board a ship bound for home.
Charlotte is taking this journey to reunite with her family, who are awaiting her return in America. Ms. Doyle boards the Seahawk in England as a special young lady but quickly things go awry when her traveling companions fail to show up for departure. It's interesting to look back on the books that I loved when I was younger and realise how much I gravitated towards ones with strong heroines, even if I didn't realise it at the time. I wasn't consciously feminist but I still looked for books that told me that women could do anything!

This is one of my favorite young adult books. I love people and so I love books with strong characters. In the beginning of this book Charolette Doyle is a very sheltered, and somewhat pampered young girl. Then she boards a ship to join her family. The family that was supposed to travel with her can't make it and she ends up the only woman on a ship full of rough sailors.

I have loved this book for years. It it the first chapter book I remember reading all by myself (not listened to on tape but actually reading). I loved it so much. Avi is a master. Loved rereading it again this time for my church book group.
Fascinating, and at times downright terrifying - with a surprise ending! Did enjoy.
