Grade A-

R.W. Day's beautiful prose, characterization, the post-apocalyptic fantasy world she created and the young adult, coming-of-age story in A Strong and Sudden Thaw caught both my attention and imagination from page one and I couldn't put the book down until it was done.

Approximately one hundred years after the Ice nearly ended civilization, the people of Moline, Virginia are still recovering from the catastrophe. The cold and snow still plague the north, but Virginia is a place where peopl

Generally an excellent novel, and well deserving of its status as a genre classic, but it could’ve been even better, I believe, had it been written as a stand-alone and the character of Callan had been handled a bit more carefully.

Following are the unanswered questions that made me crazy.

Was the climate change artificially induced or not? Why were the dragons genetically engineered (or however they were created): t

This is definitely not a new release and in fact it’s even been re-released by Lethe Press and rumors abound that the author has written a sequel. So why it’s taken me so long to read my favorite genre (post-apocalyptic urban fantasy), I can’t exactly say but I’m glad I finally did. A Strong and Sudden Thaw is masterfully written and contains some of the best prose and flow that I’ve read. The characterization is solid and the world building incredibly dynamic, which gives some stunning moments ...more

The Review:

Honesty from the outset~

I'm a huge, huge fan of speculative fiction. For those not familiar with the term, speculative fiction is basically a catch-all word used to encompass the genres of science fiction, fantasy, futuristic, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal... well, you get the point.

Not only is this story speculative, but the setting is futuristic, post-Apocalyptic Earth - one of my fave eva genres - and has a terrific frontier-like feel to it. Think Firefly or Jericho.

A facinating 1st book from R.W. Day. Set 100 years into the future after an ice storm ravages the world, civilization reverts back to primitive times. The writing is captivating, and the characters strong. My only criticism would be at times the action is predictable and even the surprises don't surprise. Fantastic first novel and I look forward to reading more from this author. The social commentary is spot on.

This easily becomes one of my personal top ten favorite gay themed novels, I am surprised on how much effort was put into developing the storyline that gave me the satisfaction of reading a well-planned and plotted novel. The willingness to terminate a sub-dominant character added the feeling of realism into the story. Amazing book.
