The name is punny. Get it, because the word for the number nine in Japanese is pronounced “Q.” It doesn’t really have much to do with Orwell’s 1984 though, so I am not sure why he went with that title. It may had made more sense to use a different but adjacent year to avoid comparisons. The title, although punny, is just one example of poor forethought on this book though.

This one delivered, on epic 900+ pages scale, everything I love about reading Haruki Murakami. As usual with him, this book is like entering a disjointed, waking, dream-state as you read it. Time and events unfold, but you aren't quite sure if they mean anything, will have some meaning later, have a tremendous amount of meaning or, are just meaningless events. Perhaps I've outgrown Murakami and/or perhaps this is just not a very good Murakami book.

I always think I'm going to get a fresh twist when I read the plot summary to one of his novels because he usually succeeds in developing an intricate and original overarching story, but like a Japanese Philip Roth, he keeps writing the same protagonist and incorporating and relying on the same narrative elements to tell these interesting stories. I'm all for motifs, but isn't there another whisky in all of

Total fart suckage added by donkey punch to the nuts MASSIVE annoying book read cover to cover and HATE it at least its useable for loo paper.

I hope other enjoyed it as it sucked the life out of me.
