I'm going to be a bad book club group leader and give up on this book in favor of reading the ending on Wikipedia. By the second half of the book, the plot had turned into a magical loosey goosey mush and I didn't really care what happened next. I think my life will go along just fine without dragging myself through the ending.

Ummm...hmmmm....I definitely have to say that this novel was very memorable and Im glad for finally having read it, BUT -- and maybe this is just due to the "so-overhyped-that-when-one-finally-experiences-it-its-a-letdown phenomenon" -- I dont see what all the hype is about. It seemed that for YEARS EVERY.SINGLE.TIME I mentioned liking time travel to someone they would in turn recommend this novel. In fact they would recommend it SO much that they would come just short of getting on their hands ...more

I recently reread this and still enjoyed it immensely. One thing that struck me was that as the explosion of Steampunk continues and this being one of the first of the genre, it lacks many of the central tropes of so-called steampunk.

With the exception of the timetravel, which isn't explained in any detail, there is not mad science. If anything there is a proliferation of magic. No steam-powered carriages, or submersibles, but a great many fantasy pieces such as body swapping, Egyptian gods and

Wow, such positive reviews on this book...I'm still baffled as to why I didn't like it. I love time travel books but I could not get into this one at all. It seemed to bounce all over the place and as a result it was difficult to follow. Because it was difficult to follow, it was difficult to stay awake. Because it was difficult to stay awake, I could not read more than 10 pages at a sitting without falling asleep. Because I could not read more than 10 pages at a time, this book took much, much ...more

I was really getting into this, then got distracted by Master's Degree and it wasn't the same when I picked it back up. I am a sucker for a time travel book and try to read any good one I come across but if anything, this book by Powers has TOO many elements thrown into the mix. Lots of offshoots, plot shifts, side characters.

I didn't make it past about a 100 pages--it seemed that the author was trying too hard to make the bad guys dark and twisted--it was more horror than I like.
