I would have liked this if it had a story or things like character development. It's one thing to say "hey, let's mash up A Separate Peace with Harry Potter and Narnia, but after the joke's over there still needs to be some difference in the main character's life at the end of the book.

I really hate books about how awesome New York City is, and I'm not a big fan of books in which incredibly privileged people spend all their time whining about how hard it is to be privileged.

At the beginning, this seems to be a version of Harry Potter set in a very real/modern NY, and perhaps suitable for older young adults. But the maturity level elevates, so it's not appropriate for young teens, and the action and stakes are more realistic and terrifying than any Harry Potter book. But, like Harry, we see a young man who is unaware of his magical abilities swept into a hidden world of magic, gain friends, develop his abilities, and have magical adventures. I don't like the characters. They didn't make sense. At all. The book was oddly sexual in odd orgy beasty ways. I only finished because Omari already had. Don't bother unless you like privileged sulky emo asshats.

Okay, I subtracted a star from my rating because the whole book is basically plagiarized from other books and settings. Harry Potter, Narnia, a little bit of Stargate and Guardians of the Flame (e.g. The Sleeping Dragon) thrown in for good measure. I get that writers are often influenced by things that they’ve read or watched, but come ON, this was blatant.
