What Members Thought

Jenny (Reading Envy)
This is my favorite of the Murakami books I've read (and I've read about half). Where I sometimes feel distant from or frustrated with his characters, I loved Aomame and Tengo, as well as several of the characters in their periphery. I loved the alternate reality. I loved how music permeated everything, and I listened to the works mentioned during most of my reading of the book (it starts with Janacek and moves through Haydn 'cello sonatas before touching on the St. Matthew Passion and Horowitz'...more
I have so much to say about this novel that I am almost out of words as to how to say it. In fact, most of what I want to say will most likely remain with me and not here in my review.

As usual, Murakami takes us on a whimsical journey ending in the least expected place. His writing is elegant and thoughtful as he develops this magical and intoxicating journey of Tengo and Aomame. I liked how Murakami used the length of this book to turn it into so many different things--a mystery, a thriller, a fairytale, a sci-fi alternate worlds story, a long-lost love story. It kept changing. I wasn't very attracted to the characters, but the ideas were compelling and kept me interested in what was going on.
This was a really long book with a blah ending. It was all set up for a climatic exciting ending but the author gave in to happily ever after with zero splash. I'm rather disappointed in it, but I did enjoy the story leading up to the ending.
