What Members Thought

This is my favorite of the Murakami books I've read (and I've read about half). Where I sometimes feel distant from or frustrated with his characters, I loved Aomame and Tengo, as well as several of the characters in their periphery. I loved the alternate reality. I liked how Murakami used the length of this book to turn it into so many different things--a mystery, a thriller, a fairytale, a sci-fi alternate worlds story, a long-lost love story. It kept changing. I wasn't very attracted to the characters, but the ideas were compelling and kept me interested in what was going on.

This was a really long book with a blah ending. It was all set up for a climatic exciting ending but the author gave in to happily ever after with zero splash. I'm rather disappointed in it, but I did enjoy the story leading up to the ending.
