This novel will appeal to those readers of historical fiction who seek to escape from the Tudors in England! It is set initially in Sweden, and this makes for a refreshing change. It is strong on character but weaker on a sense of period, but then I'm sure that is what the author intended.

This book by the talented Christina Courtenay has everything, romance, suspense, locales in three different countries, a long sea voyage, a jealous cousin, a greedy step father, a dominant grandfather. Jess Van Sandt knows too well her step father has swindled her and determines to prove it but finds herself helpless until hardened gambler Killian Kinross enters her life. In Scotland, Killian's cousin is determined to inherit all of Lord Rosyth's estate.
Killian doesn't intend to remain a gambler

This was a fun read. I was surprised at how quickly I was drawn in. I loved the characters Killian and Jess. Very cute believable love story.

Mild swearing
Skipped over the love scene.
I really didn't enjoy the writing, but the story itself was a good thought.

I love Christina Courtenay's writing style and the interaction between her characters. She makes you care about the people in her book. In this one, the villain was just a little to obviously evil but overall a very enjoyable read. Looking forward to the sequel the this one.
