Brilliant, beautifully written. Now I understand why Raymond Chandler defines the noir crime genre. Features tough-guy detective Phillip Marlowe, and will keep you engaged till the end, assuming you can stomach the sexism and racism.

I've never really read any of Chandler's stuff - oh, I've heard about it for years! But yea, this is the master of noir hisself. Great stuff. Looking forward to reading more as soon as I get my hands on the books.

Chandler is a master at taut, punchy, and absolutely great prose. He is not too bad at writing dialogue either. Marlowe has to be one of the best characters ever created in American fiction.

my only complaint is that there were a lot of characters and i had a hard time keeping everyone straight in my head. otherwise i loved it. tons of great one-liners.

Chandler needed an editor; some pages could have been chopped. Still, it's about character, mood, and society, which I enjoyed more than a standard whodunnit.
