I love Anthony Trollope.

is a wonderfully rich book, ripe with history and fearless in its investigation of the age old question 'What<\i> do women want?'. It travels effortlessly between teh august halls of Parliament, where men collude and collide in the name of glory and progress, while not forgetting and pangs of the heart that those of the gentler sex might feel because they cannot enter those halls, nor cast a ballot to determine who may. What a beautiful, sweeping novel. Everything is pulled in, every ethical question of the day. It's "extreme adventure" for Victorian women - the quest for an appropriate and emotionally beneficial marriage. Trollope's ideas on this issue come through loud and clear, but his women are more complex, nuanced, and believable than most fictional Victorian women. This is the first novel in the Palliser series, and it's about as Victorian as you get. Sexist, classist, racist, peopled with ridiculous characters that are mere caricatures, replete with plot twists that make no sense and social mores that are laughable. Trollope would never write one sentence when he could write a chapter, and never write a chapter when he could write another 50 pages.
