One of the small pleasures of growing older is that you can re-read your favourite books and, for the most part, they seem fresh and new; one fondly recalls the core story but generally forgets the local colour, the descriptions and prose styling. I wish I had read this before reading Isherwood's Mr Norris Changes Trains. The style of this was not as fluid as Mr. Norris and the characters were not as likable.
