Kurt Wallander is a conflicted man. He agonizes over his lost relationship with his wife Mona but has fantasies about a mysterious black woman and the new Public Prosecutor. He wants to have a closer relationship with his daughter Linda but has no idea where she is. He neglects his aging father but feels guilty about it. Perhaps it is the spirit behind Henning Mankell's Wallender that makes the series so intriguing. I sense a deep concern for Swedish society---how it works and how it fails---at the heart of every Wallender novel I've read so far. Even an ideal society has it's issues, apparently.
Mankell's pacing is top notch as he reveals more and more about his detective and Sweden in 1991, when the novel was written. Wallendar is not a paragon, far from it, but the reader comes to appreciate the man's focus on

This is a great detective book. You get to see as Wallander goes solving the mistery of who the killer is in a very analitic procedure.
At the same time one can see who Wallander is and his regular life (his problems with his daughter and dad) to get a more rounded idea of why he investiates how he does it.
It is a book that kees you reading it till you finish, and wanting to see if there is more Wallander.

My introduction to Mankell. I instantly became a fan. Very evocative, and Wallander is an icon of loneliness.
