It is easy to spend the first few pages thinking about the similarities with Haldeman and Heinlein. I came fairly close to putting it down, but now that I am finished, I am very glad I didn't.
Military sci-fi can be very weighty. Sometimes the mass comes from technology or military tactics and ephemera or it can be politics and moralizing that render a good premise into a bad book.
