This book is about a girl growing up in Nova Scotia in the late 1800's early 1900's. It basically chronicles her life from the age of 15 to 30. It's a fantastic book. I've never read Ami McKay (in fact, I don't even know if she has other books), but I loved her. Although the book is fiction, it is based on true events and does make several references to "real history" (like the fairfax bombings).

The Birth House is a fascinating novel that deals with the transition between the time of midwifery and modern-day birth practices.
Contains some sexual and graphic content (it is about birth after all).
