What Members Thought

This is a cop whodunit that takes place in a small town in Ireland. The author's writing style is very fluid and quick, so the book seemed to go by quickly. It was interesting that she chose her main character to more or less blow everything up, and then try to convince us that it makes sense. Towards the end, the author makes an appeal to us that we should believe his crazy decisions, even if it doesn't totally make sense. More a police procedural than a mystery, this was a story I couldn't put down, with interesting, well-developed characters and some surprises at the end. When I picked up this book my wife told me that the ending was “problematic.” Boy, she wasn’t kidding. The ending didn’t sit well with me at all.

And I really had a hard time getting into this book. I remember thinking at one point, “This is the most confounding and boring book!”

My Mystery Book Group read this for one it's recent choices. None of us were happy with the ending, but we certainly had a lot to talk about! Overall an interesting and worthwhile read, but the author did seem to jump the shark a bit towards the end.
