[close] Our book club pick for August is Miss Lonelyhearts & the Day of the Locust, one volume containing two novellas by Nathanael West. Though West was not well-appreciated as a writer during his time, both books are now regarded as classics. They are spot-on depictions of Depression-era struggles---MISS LONELYHEARTS is set in a newspaper office and LOCUST is set in Hollywood---but show a very different side of America during that time than the novels of Steinbeck and other writers who chronicled rural poverty. Though his writing can be cynical, there's also a great deal of dark humor to smooth over the right spots. The novellas can be discussed independently of each other, but they'll both gain a lot if we read and discuss both together. However, we did choose this book so that book club members can make time for the book and still have their summer plans, so even if you only read one, you'll still be set for book club!
