"Just getting started. From the author's note this promises to be a very interesting story." — Jul 13, 2009 11:37AM

While I normally love this series, I didn't really like this one very much. I think the main problem for me was how it tried to weave two stories together, one from the past and one from the present. I've never really liked that style. Plus, I missed the regular characters. China was just on her own and all the historical detail bogged the whole thing down.

A somewhat different China Bayles herb mystery. This one takes China away from her Texas herb shop to a (fictitious) Shaker village in Kentucky. Chapters alternate between two story lines: China's present-day adventures at the restored village, and another from the time of the Shakers. The usual series characters didn't appear much in this book, but the intertwining dual plots and the Shaker atmosphere were really interesting. Includes herbal lore, Shaker history and recipes.

An interesting juxtoposition of Shaker journals alternated with a modern day mystery plot. A great read for anyone enamored with the Shaker lifestyle and crafts.
