I find Thoreau a bit overblown, even for his era. While a lot of his points are valid - reduce, live simply, abandon the rat race - he is almost insulting at times with his rhetoric - especially for someone who only lived in the woods for a couple years. However, there are beautiful quotes in the books and his descriptions of Walden pond and surrounding environs are wonderful. Still a worthwhile venture back to a simpler age.
