Nervy and troubling and erotic, this tale of a woman traveling down the Yangtze to scatter the ashes of a former lover is infused with life/death-past/future conflicts and is a kind of Zen koan, a literary bookend to Lost in Translation. We are all lost in love, and only one outcome is ever certain. Michelle renders all this with clearheaded pizazz, achieving melancholy without melodrama.
