An amazing story that starts with a disturbance in the life of a homely Hobbit. The unpleasantness leads on to an adventure that spans the known world of Middle Earth and sets the stage for the final battle with the Dark Lord, Sauron of Mordor.

Class book. I really wanted to love this. Lord of the Rings bored me to a sludgy state of brain paralysis, but I had a feeling about The Hobbit, that maybe it would do something magical for me. Alas, no! Though on saying that, there are things I loved: Bilbo, for a start, and Beorn, and Beorn's honey, and... that's about it, mostly. But I'm glad I've read it, and perhaps I'll give it another go in a few years.
