Some say that a love scene is essential to a Romance novel because the hero learns something vital, special, and mind-changing about the heroine during love-making. Or vice-versa.
I like to do the same thing with a game of chess, or a tarot reading. (Occasionally, alas, my editor wants the game scene cut.)
