The Atheist Book Club

In these gilded halls we shall discuss the presence of the atheistic viewpoint in the written form. Are you a fan of Douglas Adams' scientific view of a possible universe in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Are you unable to decide between Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion and Christopher Hitchens' God is Not Great? Are you aching to argue that the Hardy boys were secular humanists? Then look no further!

Atheism has moved a long way since I was a child, and for the most part that movement has been brought about by the academics. Carl Sagan, the four horsemen, and all of the other professorial writers, have presented ideas to us that were at once both challenging and obvious. Over time our culture integrated these thoughts, and as the years passed those who believed in them learned to trust themselves enough to defend them.

... but there remains the non-converted. Those whose faith is so rooted in identity, so much a fundamental part of their existence, that the very idea their ideologies could be questioned is a huge threat. An attack. They are the ones who need to be reached, and I fear the academics have not got the power or the influence to do so.

So, to my question:

Is it time for the poets, the novelists, the story tellers and the intellectual wanderers to step up? Is it time for 'Atheist Fictional Literature' to become a reality?

Once you've voted, please take the time to write your thoughts on the matter below. :-)

Yes! Atheist authors have been far too silent for far too long!

Perhaps. There are atheist and humanist writings out there, but they simply aren't getting enough attention.

No. The intellectuals have the means and the manners to spread the word. The cause of reason won't be furthered by lusty pamphlets about atheist liaisons.

Not really. Possibly inflammatory fiction isn't going to help anyone.
