9859 i pretty much agree with Alex's posting - the director shows the influence past classic sci-fi films - most obviously 2001 - but still manages to make this film all his own.

and while the themes explored in Moon - the isolation of space, how loneliness affects our grasp on reality, bad bad corporations and the misuse of science in the pursuit of profit - aren't partiuclarly innovative in themselves, the way the story unfolds makes more of the mystery than what really exists. what i mean to say is that the director does a very good job with the story he has.

i think the low budget of this movie really worked in his favour, and of course the casting of Rockwell is perfect. but then, the casting of Rockwell always seems perfect.

9859 the only thing i found interesting about this movie is the fact that Kathy Bates, as Secretary of State is the highest level government agent we see. both the president and the vice president are hiding out in a bunker in a mountain somewhere. a far cry from Independence Day where the president is flying a fighter plane - standing with 'his' people, facing the danger together and all that. i found that an interesting hollywood view on current American politics.
