Yes I recommend it.
Very ahead of its time in 1952.
"Mr Carpenter" the alien played by Michael Rennie has a lot of Christ like symbolism. It was the first serious sci-fi movie of the era.
Im afraid Im with Alex on this one.
I caught sight of it half way through only for a few minutes. Production values looked good, but I didnt make an effort to watch it. Perhaps later if I hear word of mouth is good.
I only just found this thread I was curious to see what people thought of this movie.Nothing too surprising.
I saw it through Netflix a few months ago.
I dont usually start a movie hoping it stinks, I always try to give it the benefit of doubt, perhaps something good or entertaining will emerge to justify my expense and or time in viewing it?
In this case the movie failed on all counts.
Total waste of time.
I dont blame it all on Keanu. He isnt the best actor in the world, but not even his wooden acting was the worse thing about this turkey.
Well in Max's case, he was already well established when he played Jesus, but supposedly playing Jesus on film is the kiss of death for an actor's career.
I just saw a promo for the new THE PRISONER, I was prepared to dismiss it, but I'm a fan of Ian McKellen.
They say that every actor who plays Jesus on film is cursed to fall into mediocrity, lets see if this happens to Jim Caviezel.
I never understood the appeal of this program when I watched it on my local PBS station in the 70's. Im curious to see if it will engage me better now that I'm in my 40's.
I never really got the science fiction aspect, the first time I saw it, but Im very curious and anxious to give it another chance.
Its actually a very short movie. It would have been nice if they could have given it a little more flesh. It has always seemed kind of awkward an unfinished. Ive always wondered if there is any missing footage that could have been salvaged?
Perhaps we could have learned just a little more about the replicants? Yes we know they want to live and survive, Rutger Hauer shares a little of his memories while he is dying. I wanted to see and hear more.
I always feel a little disappointed with this film. A good film, but not a great film. Somehow it doesnt really connect with me, though I love the visuals, especially the opening shots of Los Angeles in 2020.I never believed Deckard was a replicant, I suspect that in order to be considered even more cool, it was suggested later that he was a replicant after the fact.
Last night I saw the updated movie of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.
A complete piece of crap....sadly. I was skeptical when I heard they were going to update the classic movie, but I hoped maybe something worth watching might emerge.
The beauty of the classic film, is that we grow to like and sympathize with Michael Rennie's character from outer space and we also appreciate the relationship between widow Patricia Neal and her preteen son. They are all characters trying to find their place in a post WWII era when our former allies are now suspect.
No such sympathy exists for Keanu's character. I suspect that is due to the silly script and not all entirely Keanu's fault. Kathy Bates and Jennifer Connaly are great actress, but they are wasted on this movie.
If you havent seen the updated version; feel secure in knowing you havent missed a thing.
I have been wanting to see this movie, ever since I learned of its existence when I was in college.
Its one of those movies often cited in all the sci-fi/cinema literature.
alas some day.....
Ive heard of the Internal flame........
oh wait......!!!!
I meant the Eternal flame..........
Never mind
I never questioned the "physics" necessary to shrink the crew to perform surgery at the micro level.
I always questioned the light source that illuminated the beautiful universe inside the human body of "Fantastic Voyage"
Phillip???
Isnt Hugh Beumont the guy who played Beaver's Dad in "Leave it to Beaver"?
I think you meant Hugh Marlowe ??
It was really a stupid scene. The submarine is bombarded with chunks of perfectly formed sheet ice that has apparently melted from the ice caps.
The crew in the submarine are looking out that huge "viewing" window and seeing the ice fall.......which reminds me....where is all that light coming from, that enables them to have such great visibility???
here is another one from my childhood. In the 1961 movie "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"
the Van Allen radiation belt catches fire and causes temperatures on Earth to start climbing, producing massive ecological damage....as ridiculous as that premise is.......I was always bothered by those scenes of the "Seaview" (submarine)while she is traveling under the Arctic Ice caps. As the ice caps start to melt, we see the submerged submarine getting pelted with huge chunks of sinking ice.
Physics was never my strong point, but even as a child, I knew water was more dense than ice, there is absolutely NO WAY for ice to sink!!!!
