I just finished The Wind-up Bird Chronicles. It took me over a month to read which for me is a long time. It was a great book but not for those who don't enjoy a surreal adventure.
I also think that Swift hits the head on the nail with A Modest Proposal! I can't wait to read Gulliver's Travels.
I thought Robinson Crusoe was long winded and boring. I did think it was well written and understand why it was on the list.
What I did with the list was combine it with the UK guardian's top 100, Times top 100, and Random Houses top 100. A lot of the books overlap but a good thirty don't which include, just to name a few-
The Wind in the Willows
The BFG
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
The Golden Compass
etc, etc
The Uk Guardian top one hundred novel list is really interesting and diverse.
Actually, I read a collection of Gilman's short stories that included The Yellow Wallpaper and really loved her work. Her short stories were strong and I think that's hard to do sometimes.
Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Saw There.
Yelena,
That book was so hard to put down, truly a masterpiece!
The Road was interesting. I thought it was well written and disturbing. I sort of found the symbolism at the end of the book to be a odd choice. I won't say what that was because I don't want to spoil the book, but if you've read the book you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Ed,
If you're curious about your reading speed there are some fun tests online to measure that sort of thing. Type into google "reading spped test" and many will pop up.
As for your question, I read about two books a week. I find I read faster as I get into books. I'm a restaurant manager so I don't have a lot of time.
My 2007 New Year's resolution was to read a book a week and I totally passed that a while ago, I think if you set fun goals for yourself, you end up reading more. I also started a book journal, so I could track my progress and write my thoughts and feelings on books. It's actually been a really fun experience.
As for TV, I hate it. I try to watch as little as possible! I'd rather spend my free time reading or with my fiance.
I'm sorry about being so blunt but I found that the interfacing of that website to be really irritating.
The reason American Psycho is on the list is because when it was published it caused a huge stir in the public due to the language and the violence to women. It's one of those books that is worth reading because it caused so many debates.
On a side note, I'm surprised Naked Lunch by Burroughs isn't on the list.
Alice's adventures in Wonderland. I read this in high school and didn't like it but I like it a lot better now.
I just joined goodreads.com. I decided in January to read the 100 best novels of all time, according to 4 different sources, then I found your group and made one jumbo master list. Anyway, I've read 30 so far...I get distracted by other books that aren't on the list. Sorry for the long post.
