I finished "The Stone Dairies" by Carol Shields.The middle dragged a little for me, but the first few and the last few chapters made it all together a fine read.
I agree that the film was better than the book on this one! I recommend those struggling with it go and rent the dvd, then go back to it. Just a thought....
I started "Wise Blood" by Flannery O'Connor yesterday.I read "A Good Man is Hard to Find" a couple of weeks ago and wanted more...
Hardy doesn't do miracle solutions to overwhelming problems and happy endings for his protagonists like Dickens. He's much darker. "Far From the Madding Crowd" is his "lightest" novel.

There is nothing by Rand on either of the lists.
Hawksmoor* - Peter AckroydThis is my first by this author, and it is a memorable experience. I'm still not sure how much I liked it though it is certainly creative!
