Thanks everyone for participating! I loved reading them all!And the winner is...
*drum roll*
Rob with his haiku:
thousand and one books
laughing and mocking me, cry
read me if you can
Congrats Rob!
It was a very hard decision...cause I also reallllly liked Jessica's limerick because it's just so true. =)
Oh I know that it's past time to sleep
But these pages compel me to keep
Reading books from the list
Not a one may be missed
The size of the task makes me weep.
It was a quick read...but reading it without any background whatsoever was a but difficult for me. It would have helped to read about it in Wikipedia first. =)
I think mine would be Oroonoko. I had NEVER heard of it until this book...plus it's really old. Does that count? =)
Generally there are only 2 types of messages I would mark as important...both are rare. 1. Administrative messages from me to the group. I mark these important because I think everyone should get a chance to read it and I want to keep it at the top. (which may not happen because I usually don't require a response to it)
2. Administrative messages from some group members to the rest of the group. Like when we started the Monthly 1001 reading club. Mara (the group member whose idea it was to start that book club) kept getting messages about how the book club worked. In order to cut down on people asking the same questions over and over, we just posted a "FAQ" about the new book club as important so it would stay at the top for a few weeks.
If you think your message needs to be at the top for a period of time, just message me first and I'll let you know what I think.
I took care of those. Please let me know if they start doing that again...I'll try to keep an eye on it though...
LOL I managed to get through my formative years without reading persuasion...I figured it was time. =)
As a side note: Empire Falls by Richard Russo is loosely based off my hometown (and Russo's) of Gloversville, NY. There are many amusing characters in that town. =)
Hi Everyone!
I am amazed at how large this group has gotten! (biggest group on goodreads!) When I started it I thought there would only be a few nuts like myself that wanted to take on this goal. Boy, how wrong I was!
So, in celebration of having over 3000 people in the group (yes, it happened a while ago...but I was busy). I've decided that we need a fun contest!
A few months ago, Rachelle Rogers Knight asked me to review a book of hers that she thought was perfect for this group. I agreed. However, I have gotten so busy that I haven't had the time to actually post a decent review of the book (sorry Rachelle!). The book is called Read, Remember, Recommend; A Reading Journal for Book Lovers.
She sent me a copy, but I want to give it to someone that will show it the respect it needs and post a review for the group!
Here is what I propose:
Post a haiku or limerick (the only forms of poetry I can handle) about this group, the 1001 book or something along the same lines to this thread and I will choose a winner to get the book. I will choose the winner based on the haiku or limerick that I liked the most! (Which can be totally arbitrary depending on the mood I’m in that day!)
The deadline for submission is August 10th, 2008 at 6 PM Pacific Time.
Have fun!
-Kim (the management)
I'm reading the third policeman right now...and it's so odd. I think I like it...but I'm not completely sure quite yet. I am amused though! =)
It was sooo much better than the movie! (of course I always say that about books made into movies)I thought it was interesting how he was on the side of his captors (the Japanese) but it wasn't like Stockholm syndrome. He truly had compassion and an interest in their side of the war. Or maybe he was just on the sides of the pilots he admired??
While I'm sure the editors of the book had good reasons to include each of the books, I feel that they should make a companion book. I want a book with just the primary few hundred or so that are most spectacular...and take out the authors that are listed time and time again (I'm looking at you Kazuo Ishiguro!. It would also make the list less daunting! =)
I found Les Mis to be much easier to read than War and Peace. So you might want to start with that one =)
I just hit 6%! I was really excited until I realized that I had 94% to go. Oy. I must think optimistically! =)
I just finished this one and the only thing I can think of is:
It's the Japanese version of "The Remains of the Day".
It was just way too similar.
Nice! I love being psychic! ;) Judith - I re-added in those books that you accidentally deleted. But for the future...you can just go the the "add books" search box at the lower left hand side of the bookshelf page.
wow I forgot it was a movie! I remember seeing that years ago...all I remember is that it went on and on forever! Hopefully the book zooms by! =)
