970 I started The Awakening last night. I really like it so far.

970 I finished North and South last night. I really liked it overall, but I didn't exactly like the heroine. I definitely need to watch the BBC version.

970 I've only read A Room With a View, and I loved it. I do have A Passage to India on my Kindle, maybe I'll try to move it up the to-read list if it is as good as you all say! I guess that A Room With a View might have been 'simple,' but I still thought that it was beautifully written and moving.

970 Thanks Julia. I'm not really far enough into the book to know what to think, I guess I'll just have to keep reading. What you said about the "righteous [being:] less tolerant, generous and helpful than those deemed 'pagans' by them" is exactly what bothered me so much!

970 I'm only in the 'Genesis' chapter. I think I have heard everyone's voice so far, except the father's, so it's a little early for me to comment on the characters themselves.

I recently read the part where the family meets the townspeople, and the father says a prayer. I was quite bothered by the prayer. Are people sinners simply because of the circumstances of their lives, or their customs and history? I was upset for the townspeople, even though they probably didn't know the words 'darkness' and 'nakedness.' It made me wonder what the previous missionaries were like. The townspeople welcomed the Prices with open arms, so were their previous experiences with missionaries more positive? Hearing that prayer just made me angry. He gives the impression that Christians can only be middle class white people.
970 Thanks for the advice, Dean. Just looking at the titles of Welsh's other works has made me think twice about it.

970 I'll start The Poisonwood Bible next.

970 A little behind, but I finally finished Trainspotting. I thought it was brilliant....
970 I finally finished, and I feel quite depressed now! It's hard for me to believe that there are people in the world that actually live like this. I actually enjoyed reading this book, though, if only for insight into a world I hope I never have anything to do with. I probably wouldn't have picked it up without this group. I might even try to read more Irvine Welsh!
970 I find it interesting that every drug but heroin is acceptable in their definition of 'clean'. Even if they don't take any drugs, they're always drinking.

It is on the list--and one of my favorites! You should also check out the movie with Kevin Spacey, I thought they did a decent job.

970 I really enjoyed this book. I chose it for my book club last March. I knew that it was classified as Young Adult, but I never had that impression while reading it. Maybe the subject matter made it more mature. Also, it was interesting to have a WWII story told from the side of German citizens. I can think of others, but most novels that I've read concerning this time period are from the Jewish point of view. As far as my book club was concerned, some really liked it and some thought it was so-so. Can't please everyone.
970 I'm starting to struggle with the characters. There are a lot of them, and they all seem to have multiple names. Maybe I should watch the movie, or make a list.

970 I'm still working on Trainspotting, but I have started North and South since I've recently heard people raving about it.

970 Finished Await Your Reply A Novel last night.
970 I'm only about 30 pages in, but I am surprised to be enjoying the book so much. I don't feel like the language is holding me back anymore, although I do occasionally check the glossary in the back of my edition. I found the changes in voice to be pretty obvious, but now I wonder if I missed some changes in the very beginning.

970 Finally started Trainspotting. I'm able to read it pretty quickly at this point, I've gotten past the 'language' barrier. So far, I like it better than I expected.

970 Their Eyes Were Watching God. A good quick read. I was pretty interested in it while I was reading it, but I still only gave it three stars in the end.

That is why I'm worried about Trainspotting, not because of the subject matter. I am currently reading Their Eyes Were Watching God, and most everything is spelled out phonetically. It's quite a challenge.
